Random Football Thoughts As Mini Mini Camps Roll On‏

Hey all,

well interesting things keep popping up on the radar…

Today, The Dallas Cowboy D took a HUGE hit with the season ending loss of LB Sean Lee. He is the Dallas Defensive QB and when he went down last year the D collapses. All their improvements will be hurt by the loss of this key player.

Earlier – Michael Vick said he can take the Jets to the Superbowl. I wonder if that is because he knows a guy who has a nice plane and can carry all the Jets to the stadium to watch 2 other teams play for the title?

Also today – Miami Thug Mike Pouncey says he has no apology for his part in the bullying scandal. Not surprised…he has never apologized for flashing gang signs and wearing a ‘Free Hernandez’ t-shirt.

Lastly, RIP Malcolm Glazer. He had an unique style and like it or not he built the Bucs into world champs and was basically a common sense owner and will be missed.

MR N’s Post Draft Week #NFL

Well we are through the excitement of the draft and most key free agents are signed. Now we are getting to the business end of the nitty gritty. The BEARS are having early success signing some of their picks including their 1st rounder. We will have the ‘drama’ of who signs and who doesn’t now. Heard Cleveland is taking an odd approach to dealing with the circus of Johnny. Banning nat’l media from rookie camp, deciding he can’t start. Seem to be trying to stop any positive vibe and media attention. Yeah, Cleveland is such a hot bed of national interest it is understandable that they are now bored of it lol.

MR N’s #NFL Draft Wrap Up Thoughts‏

I was going to do a long, thoughtful analysis of the last 4 rounds. There were a lot of solid picks made including a great lineman to Minnesota and QB Fales to my own BEARS. I was going to just let the Michael Sam thing slide. I don’t care if he is married to a Martian and lives in a rodeo barn…I only care that he seems to run a slow 40, not have a great jump and can’t bench much. His production came against lesser teams in the SEC. All that being said, he has a shot to earn a spot in St. Louis and that is all everyone in life deserves is a shot. What gets me is the reactions to the draft from a team that should have learned to have it’s players keep their collective mouths shut. The Stupidity of the Dolphins franchise seems to know no bounds. First the convicted murderer supporting, bully supporting, gang supporting Mike Pouncey tweeted out a super stupid tweet about the pick of J. Jones on how the Fin O line can’t wait for the ‘gifts’ Jones will get them. Then yesterday 2nd year Dolphin Dom Jones said the draft pick of Sam was “OMG” “Horrible”. Everyone is allowed their opinion but if you are associated with the nuclear disaster that is the Dolphin team atmosphere discretion is the better part of everything.

Ridiculous.

MR N’s #NFL Draft Round 2 Analysis

MR N’s NFL Draft Round 2 Analysis

33. Houston Texans – the selection of Xavier Su’A-Filo G is a good pick for Houston. They can still get a QB in the 2nd or 3rd. They need help on the O line and this big body will just be a nice addition to a line that needed help. B+

34. Washington Redskins trade their pick to Dallas. The Dallas Cowboys selection of Demarcus Lawrence DE is a need pick. Jerry Jones is excited but they have gaping holes on the D line and he could generate some sort of rush and there is precious few in Dallas who do that right now. B

35. Cleveland Browns – the selection of Joe Bitonio T is a bit of a huge surprise based on the late news of Josh Gordon facing a year long suspension. Ok they need help on line and this kid will help. A good pick but they really, really needed a WR. B-

36. Oakland Raiders – the selection of Derek Carr QB is a super pick for Oakland. They had this kid fall to them and now they have at least ‘the next’ franchise QB to get ready behind Schaub. In an open competition I bet Carr is the starter week 1. A+

37. Atlanta Falcons – the selection of Ra’Shede Hageman is a good pick for a team looking to meet a need. The Falcons have brought in tons of free agents and draft picks to try to create a pass rush and this kid can’t hurt. If some of the Falcon vets can get him to commit he could be special. B++

38. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – the selection of Austin Seferian-Jenkins TE is an interesting pick for Tampa. They do need more weapons and they have a somewhat injury prone RB and now 2 big WR so a pass catching weapon TE could really expand the offense. B

39. Jacksonville Jaguars – the selection of Marquise Lee WR is a great pick for Jacksonville. They really need help at WR and this kid could be a super weapon and he instantly makes their team better. A terrific pick and they didn’t have to trade up for him. A+

40. Detroit Lions – the selection of Kyle Van Noy LB is an interesting pick for Detroit. If he simply plays LB and doesn’t take penalties and isn’t a goon, that will be a step up for a thug filled team. Play clean and help the team. B

41. Buffalo Bills – The Bills trade the pick to St. Louis Rams – the selection of Lamarcus Joyner CB a good pick for St. Louis. They seem to be amassing DBs to try to help out that back end and this kid will bring it. He may not be able to battle Megatron but he will be heard from. Good pick. B++

42. Tennessee Titans – the Titans trade the pick to Philadelphia – Philadelphia Eagles – the selection of Jordan Matthews WR is finally an attempt to fill a gaping hole on the Eagles. They didn’t have anyone much left after DeSean but now this big WR will be a weapon for Foles. He could quickly become the #1 in my opinion. B

43. New York Giants – the selection of Weston Richburg C is an interesting pick. They are getting old with their All pro Center and this kid can’t hurt what was an awful offensive line. He has to make them better. B

44. The Buffalo Bills – the selection of Cyrus Kouandjio T is a great pick. This big boy will be a huge, pun intended, addition to their line. He will be potentially more important than the addition of the 1st pick in helping the Bills. By the way, trading Stevie Johnson to SF was the STUPIDEST thing a STUPID franchise has done. But this pick? A.

45. The Seattle Seahawks – the selection of Paul Richardson WR is a classic pick for Seattle. This speedy receiver will give the Hawks another weapon that could maybe balance the team a bit more from all D to having some O. B

46. The Pittsburgh Steelers – the selection of Stephon Tuitt DE is another great addition of youth and talent to a D that is old. He could be just what the Steelers need to get a bit of giddee up going again in the Steel city. Solid pick. B++

47. The Washington Redskins – the first selection of Trent Murphy LB…hmmm. Well on the positive the Skins finally made a pick. They do massively need help on D that couldn’t stop anyone. If this kid can make an impact the Skins D is his to control. Will bear watching. B+

48. The Baltimore Ravens – the selection of Timmy Jernigan DT is a Raven pick. He could have been a first rounder. He may have off the field issues but if they reign him in he will help Mount Cody and Ngata build a mass of men on the inside. A potentially great pick. We will see. B+
49. The NewYork Jets – the selection of Jace Amaro TE is actually a need for NY. He could become Geno’s best friend. He may not block but if he can Gronk he doesn’t need to block. A weapon. Needs to be consistent. A nice pick. B+

50. The San Diego Chargers – the selection of Jeremiah Attaochu LB is a hard to spell LB who can join a solid Bolt D and make them better. A great place for him to land as he won’t have to lead but can learn and grow. A very good pick. B++

51. The Chicago BEARS – the selection of Ego Ferguson DT is a bit of a head scratcher as I don’t recognize him but he is to learn behind Ratliff. He is big, I wonder though as Chicago often grabs a DT who needs to just be consistent and then he is cut in a year or two. We will see. C-

52. Arizona Cardinals – the selection of Troy Niklas TE is another big body pass catcher but this kid can block too. Zona is lacking a good TE and a good blocker on Arizona will make that offense better. Think Young Heath Miller. B+

53. Green Bay Packers – the selection of Davante Adams WR is a good addition for GB that gets them back to the 3 WR set up the Pack like. A person that Rodgers will enjoy. Another great pick for the Packers. A-

54. Tennessee Titans – the selection of Bishop Sankey RB is a real need fix for Tennessee. Now can he be their feature back? We are going to see. If he can crack the 1,200 yards in his rookie year then this was a great addition. B

55. Cincinnati Bengals – the selection of Jeremy Hill RB is another hmmm for me. I like Hill, I think he is a solid pick but is there something wrong with Gio Bernard? They picked a RB last year so they wouldn’t need to pick one this year. Hmm. B

=>TRADES got too complicated to keep track OF<= 

56. Denver Broncos – the selection of Cody Latimer WR is a great pick for this kid. He gets to play with Peyton and they had a hole with the loss of trainwreck so he can take over for trainwreck. Good pick. B+

57. San Francisco 49ers – the selection of Carlos Hyde RB is a complete hunh pick. Ok he is a great big back. SF has about 3 dozen RBs on their team and Lattimore is about to come back and if Lattimore is ready to be the starting RB then this is even a more ridiculous pick. Great RB, have no clue what he is going to do in SF, especially with Lattimore returning from injury. D

58. New Orleans Saints – the selection of Stanley Jean-Baptiste CB is a wonderful pick for New Orleans. He will be a great addition who can play right away and will make the secondary of the Saints better and that will help the team. A

59. Indianapolis Colts – the selection of Jack Mewhort G is a pick that will help protect Luck and help open holes for Richardson. They Colts need O line help and here it is. B

60. Carolina Panthers – the selection of Kony Ealy DE is a great pick for the Panthers. Their D is fierce and this guy will just join in with an amazing crew and will get tougher. The Panthers are going to be a really tough opponent. A

61. Jacksonville Jaguars – the selection of Alan Robinson WR is further vindication to the fact that Jax had nothing on offense at all. Robinson could be a steal. Some say this guy could be the best WR out of the draft in 4 years. They are getting better on O and that is good for Jacksonville. A

62. New England Patriots – the selection of Jimmy Garoppolo QB is Brady insurance. This is interesting as if I was the backup in NE I would start leasing my house or subletting my condo. This guy will likely take over in NE in 2 to 3 years as Brady is going to be done faster than people think. A

63. Miami Dolphins – the selection of Jarvis Landry WR is a game changing pick so as to speak. Miami needs a lot of help in a lot of areas and he will be a solid Hines Ward like player and will give them a talent at WR. B++

64. Seattle Seahawks – the selection of Justin Britt T is a bit of a reach for Seattle but he will add depth on the O line and they are smart in the north west and they know what they are doing so I gotta say B.

Ok gang, I am out, I cannot do this anymore…will do a couple of draft wrap up posts after the end of 7. Peace out and I hope everyone enjoys this little taste of regular season writing!

MR N’s #NFL Draft Round 1‏

  1. Houston Texans – the selection of JaDeveon Clowney DE is a superb pick. He makes a tough Texan D insanely tough and you put him opposite JJ Watt and watch QBs they face just cringe. Tremendous A++ pick.
  2. St. Louis Rams – the selection of Greg Robinson T is a good pick. He will in theory provide the big body they need to help solidify a weak Offensive line. I probably would have gone Bloodline2 but we will just see if this big guy can hold up the pass rush from Zona, SF and Sea. B
  3. Jacksonville Jaguars – the selection of Blake Bortles QB is a surprising but excellent pick. Bortles will be a superb QB in the NFL. He may need to learn behind some sort of no account but he has the arm and talent to be a star in the NFL and I think a lot of teams just tore up their draft cards. A
  4. Cleveland Browns – have traded their pick to Buffalo – Buffalo Bills – the selection of Sammy Watkins WR is an interesting pick. He is by far the best WR available and this will make Buffalo better. It means a superb LT and LB are sliding and that makes teams below very happy. A good pick but a ton to give up to get him. I won’t know if it will be worth it until we see a year or two of him. A
  5. Oakland Raiders – the selection of Khalil Mack LB is a fantastic pick for Oakland. He is a force and will be making Oakland’s D a D that could actually pressure a QB like Rivers or Manning. The Raiders need a lot of help but he will certainly be the building block for the Silver and Black. A+
  6. Atlanta Falcons – the selection of Jake Matthews T is a great pick. He will give Atlanta the best LT they have had, I believe, since the 90’s. He is just going to make Matt Ryan an even more dangerous QB and will help a spotty effective Falcon running game. Bloodline2. A++
  7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – the selection of Mike Evans WR is a predictable pick as it seemed like TB had the hots for him. I am certainly not sure he is as good as people say for the simple reason he got a lot of stuff from crazy Manziel passes. He will need to show he can do it in the NFL. B
  8. Minnesota Vikings – have traded their pick to Cleveland – Cleveland Browns – the selection of Justin Gilbert CB is a super pick. This kid can give Cleveland 2 people who can play DB and that means they might be able to stop being ripped every time a QB drops back against them. Happiest guy is Joe Haden who stops being the lonely man on the hill. A very good pick and will be a day one starter and he could be a shutdown corner. A
  9. Minnesota Vikings – the selection of Anthony Barr LB is a gutsy pick for Minnesota but with the loss of the Rhinestone Cowboy they need a rushing defender and this kid will get better with time. In 2 years he could be the best linebacker in the NFL. A
  10. Detroit Lions – the selection of Eric Ebron TE is a solid pick for a Lion team that needs help. I hope he can be a better TE than the last few they have just drafted. They may have to cut someone because they had a lot of TE’s on the team already. Will be a skilled receiver, can he block? No one else does on TE in Detroit anyway. B
  11. Tennessee Titans – the selection of Taylor Lewan T is a very good pick. The Titans may just be smart enough to realize that Jake Locker is their franchise QB and now adding Lewan to the offseason freeagent of Mike Oher…wow, that good O line may just be great now. A
  12. The New York Giants – the selection of Odell Beckham jr WR is a good pick. The G men may have taken him to ensure he didn’t get to Philadelphia. He will give NYG a kick return game they have lacked for years. Eli is getting ancient but a new good WR can’t hurt his game. Good pick. B+
  13. St. Louis Rams – the selection of Aaron Donald DT is making a depth of riches on the D line insane. Now that pass rush can win even more games. He should make their line unstoppable. For a 2nd 1st round pick it is exceptional. B++
  14. Chicago Bears – the selection of Kyle Fuller DB is a great pick for Chicago. That was a huge need. The BEARS are old and oft beaten in the secondary and Fuller will be a huge upgrade and they might actually stop a Packer receiver from getting 37 on a 4th and 34. Good pick. A
  15. Pittsburgh Steelers – the selection of Ryan Shazier LB. Ok this is the first pick that is causing me to head scratch. There were 2 great Safeties and more than a few good DBs and they went LB. They have a secondary who are all members of AARP and this is nice but it doesn’t help their glaring holes. A miss. C-
  16. Dallas Cowboys – the selection of Zack Martin G. Hmmm. An offensive lineman to a team that needs a huge upgrade at all parts of the secondary. There are 2 Safeties falling who will be superb late first round picks. He will help protect Romo from sacks but he can’t help Romo from being Romo so this is no great pick. C+
  17. Baltimore Ravens – the selection of C.J. Mosely LB is a solid pick. They have not been able to replace Ray Lewis but this kid may finally do the job. He could quickly become a QB for the D and be the leader they have lacked. A nice pick for a team that seems to make only nice picks. B++
  18. New York Jets – the selection of Calvin Pryor S is a great pick. Pryor is going to give the Jets a solid run stopping tackler, he can cover, he can hit and he can HIT. The Jets needed help in the secondary and this kid is going to make them better. Very good pick especially for this stage of the first. A
  19. Miami Dolphins – the selection of Ja’Wuan James T is an interesting pick. Here’s hoping this kid is a tough 6’6” so he can survive the bullying atmosphere led by gang banger punk Pouncey. A team of ugliness and they just might be better but I need to see a lot of changes still to the atmosphere for me to cheer for them. C
  20. Arizona Cardinals – trade their pick to New Orleans – New Orleans Saints – the selection of Brandon Cooks WR is a very good pick and a solid reason to trade up. He is super fast, super route runner and a weapon in the kick return game. Brees will be able to make noise with this burner. Solid pick. They need DB help but they can try to just outscore people like usual. A
  21. Green Bay Packers – the selection of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix S is a great pick for GB. As a Bear fan it makes me sad that they picked up such a great D improvement this late in the first. They just got better and that is not good for the rest of the NFC North. A
  22. Philadelphia Eagles – trade their pick to Cleveland – Cleveland Browns – the selection of Johnny Manziel was exactly what I thought they would do. I can’t tell if this kid will be any good at all but Cleveland isn’t so this is a bit of a match made in Cleveland. They literally have nothing to lose and they can’t get much worse than they are so this pick is a worthy shot for a crappy team. Hell if I am them, I start him too. B
  23. Kansas City Chiefs – the selection of Dee Ford DE is an interesting pick but this might be a reach. Does KC need an edge rusher? They have strength at DE and depth there too. I think they needed to get someone like WR Lee not DE Dee. I call this Miss#2. C-
  24. Cincinnati Bengals – the selection of Darqueze Dennard CB is a fantastic pick for this late in the first. Will quickly become a starter in Cincy and make their strong D even stronger. Brilliant pick and they didn’t have to even trade up to get him. A+
  25. San Diego Chargers – the selection of Jason Verrett CB is a solid pick for a SD team desperate for secondary help. They had no one at Corner so this guy will nickel on day one and start by the bye if not sooner. Good pick! B++
  26. Philadelphia Eagles – the selection of Marcus Smith LB is my first who? Pick. The NFL invited something close to 300 college kids to NY and this kid wasn’t invited. Can he play it is asked and I ask it too. He will make them younger, he is a reach and I will reserve long term judgement but first blush is he is a reeeeeeeeeach. D
  27. Arizona Cardinals – the selection of Deone Bucannon S is an odd pick to me. There is one thing Arizona does well is cover in the defensive backfield. They were deep and adding another is good and all but heck they needed a hand on O line and could use a young QB. I don’t think this was either need or best available so I don’t know why they picked him. D-
  28. Carolina Panthers – the selection of Kelvin Benjamin WR meets a need. Carolina pretty much got rid of all of their WR that were on their roster. He is the BIG WR who needs to show he can transition to the NFL game. He could be a superstar in Carolina with Caaaaaam or he will be a Mike Williams Detroit first round bust. C
  29. New England Patriots – the selection of Dominique Easley DT is another classic NE pick. They tend to draft former high pick guys who get hurt and this works sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t. The Pats need youth on the D line, this guy could help but he has to get healthy and prove he isn’t brittle. We will see. C
  30. San Francisco 49ers – the selection of Jimmie Ward DB. I know it’s getting late for me here but it must be getting late for SF. It was all about making strides to stop Seattle’s dominance. Their answer? A little, brittle guy who may not be able to hold up in the tough NFC West. A reach by a team that talked a good draft and their draft in the first round is just a lot of talk. E
  31. Denver Broncos – the selection of Bradley Roby DB is a great pick for the 2nd last pick. He had off field issues but if he can be brought under control he will be a very good addition to a team that needs help on D. They have to stop having to outscore people 47-44. He will help. B
  32. Seattle Seahawks – trade their pick to Minnesota – Minnesota Vikings – the selection of Teddy Bridgewater is a fantastic pick for them. He immediately becomes the best QB on their team and if they feel like losing their season and starting Cassel that is fine but this kid is going to be the franchise QB they haven’t had since Culpepper. A+

Can’t wait for Round 2 and 3

#NFL Draft Day Arrives‏

nfl draft 2014

The months (and months) ((and months)) of preview come to an end with the draft today at 8pm. There will be some interesting angles to watch tonight. It was posited last night that Jerry Jones is hot for Manziel and if he doesn’t trade up for him he would jump at the chance to grab him at 16. Will be interesting to see…Romo is old and has wonky healthy (and wonky lack of playoff success) so getting a young kid who may be all flash could be what Jerry wants – not what Dallas needs but that is a different story.

So expect a couple of reports over the first few rounds of the draft. I will be jotting down my thoughts as I watch the draft and get them up the next AM. Enjoy the draft people!
