MR N’s #NFL Week 4 Power Poll‏

NFL Power Rankings

1. Cincinnati Bengals (1) – On the bye, stand as the best team in the NFL to me until I see someone beat them. If that happens I will re-evaluate of course.

2. Arizona Cardinals (2) – On the bye, stand as the 2nd best team in the NFL and are impressively doing it with a backup QB. They are #2 until they lose to someone or unless they keep winning and Cincy loses then they move up!
3. San Diego Chargers (6) – It seems the Chargers have neglected to take this matchup seriously. Evidently they overlooked the Jags and it is hurting them early. They must turn it on, on both O and D, and they have about 35 minutes to do it. San Diego seems to have given their collective heads a shake and they are starting to walk away in this game. Rivers really took over and won this game for them. A solid victory after a shaky start but a win is a win in this NFL.

4. Indianapolis Colts (9) – Trying to watch an Indy drive with the most horrible camera work by CBS. Further tho, it is inexcusable for Indy to suffer 2 false start penalties in the red zone at home. They are lucky they scored a TD. Another excellent domination so far. A great win for a Colt team that is winning the easy games which isn’t as easy as it should be in today’s NFL. Solid win.

5. Baltimore Ravens (11) – Steve Smith is getting his ‘revenge’ with 2 early TDs and the Raven o is off and running and well out ahead early. Ravens are running and throwing as they wish and are slowly pulling away. Superb win. The Ravens also are winning the easy games. Will be interesting to see this team tested against another good team whenever that happens.

6. Dallas Cowboys (14) – The Cowboys had a great game plan and tore it up from the start. A powerful running game, accurate and turnover free passing. The D did enough to shut down the Saints but the grinding, ball control offense did the best thing…keep NO off the field. Brilliant game. Best of the year and now the Cowboys look like a good team. Can they keep this up?

7. Seattle Seahawks (7) – On the bye, coming off a win. I am not sold that the Seahawks are as good as the team that won the Super Bowl and the next game will help me figure that out.

8. Denver Broncos (8) – On the bye, coming off a tough loss. I am not certain how good this team is either and the week by week battles will help determine just how good or not they are.

9. Kansas City Chiefs (16) – That was a game that KC used to play last year in the first half. They were dominant on both sides of the line. The O line opened holes for Charles and Charles looked like a beast. The Line held up to give Alex Smith time to be effective and Travis Kelce at TE is a revelation. A superb O performance. Add that to excellent D and solid special teams and now we have to see if the Chiefs can do this again.

10. Green Bay Packers (17) – Pack answers with an O plan that took apart a kinda sleepy BEAR D. This could be a shootout. Two TDs early. The Pack are having their way on O and D is being decent. Green Bay playing their best game of the year so far. Makes Rodgers look prescient in his comments. They played well, took advantage of turnovers and lacklustre Bear D and won it going away.

11. San Francisco 49ers (19) – SF is playing poor special teams, Kapaernick has already turned it over, the Niners are down and their D is playing good. Not a great start. SF deserves full credit for gutting it out and taking a late lead. Can their less than 100% D make the key stops necessary to win this game? We will see. The Niners D indeed did enough to win them a game. Now they need to win another to really impress me. A win is a win.

12. Detroit Lions (13) – The Lions early have been keying on the run and that is being stifled, not surprisingly, by a solid Jet Run D. Pass the ball you nitwits. Detroit has managed to pull out a 2 td lead and if they can keep the D pressure up they should be ok. The Lions managed to eke out a win. Somehow this team is 3-1 and I give them credit for winning but they are not a very good 3-1 and will be whupped by a real opponent easily.

13. New York Giants (25) – That was a picture perfect game by the G-men. Eli was looking like he was a young man, his receivers were running good routes and making amazing catches. The run game with Jennings looked superb. I was totally impressed by the sudden good play of the NY Giant Offensive line. They had resembled tackling dummies at times. They dominated and kept Eli clean and opened huge holes for rushes. The D played well, their schemes were unable to be stopped and the pressure on the QB was the difference. That allowed their secondary to play stronger. A great team effort and superb win in the division. Now their task is to keep this roll going.

14. Philadelphia Eagles (3) – The Eagles are out to a good lead on the road by playing superb special teams and solid D. The O hasn’t really started working yet and they already are ahead. If they do their second half explosion this will be over early. The Eagles O can’t get going and they have slowly fallen behind and now it rests on the back of the Eagle O to get a TD to win the game. Foles looks like a rookie who can’t play in the NFL. He appears to be unable to get it done in the clutch and that is bad for Philly. Ugly loss.

15. Chicago BEARS (4) – Opening Drive was just about BEAR perfect and capped with a GB DB falling down and going boom while Marshall caught a TD. If the BEAR D can’t figure out how to stop GB this is going to be a long day. The Bears need to get their D more efficient 2nd half. It appears the Bears D isn’t going to show up today and the Bears need a miracle to pull out a game that is getting out of hand in the third quarter. Cutler added golden turnovers to a poor D performance and the BEARS get humiliated at home and now the team is at a critical crossroads. How good is this team?

16. Houston Texans (18) – Early on it is effective D and no O whatsoever. The Texans have to hope for a turnover and maybe, just maybe, a completion or two. Already a turnover for Fitz. Houston needs to explore other QB options. Fitzpatrick gives TDs or Picks he is all or nothing. The Texans have a lead but their Offense isn’t exciting or remarkable. It was enough to beat Buffalo while playing at home and that makes Houston, not Detroit, the worst 3-1 team in football.

17. New England Patriots (5) – I have to start this with the obvious point. Tom Brady made a big point before the season started that he would play until he “sucked”. Well Tom, hate to break this to you but you suck. You totally suck. You can’t throw a deep ball, you get upset and holler on the sidelines and you spend more time on your backside than when you are at home. The Pat D is a joke. They can’t cover, they can’t tackle a running back. The Special teams have issues. The Offense is a mix of never was and has been and this team is really close to circling the bowl and looking more like Pats of 1991 not 2013.

18. Miami Dolphins (20) – Miami looking more balanced in England too. Perhaps we have a meeting of two equal value teams and that can be a competitive matchup. (they just happen to both be really bad!) The Dolphin O simply needed to play against the Raider D in order to get on track. Starting to put it away early into the third quarter. Tannehill effectively makes his Head Coach look like a putz with his blazing performance. Excellent team win. Well done.

19. Atlanta Falcons (10) – The Falcons are in a battle and they didn’t expect this. Their Offense is able to move the ball but their D is having great trouble stopping Minnesota and they are in a tight one early. The Falcons questionable D is being pushed about and they find themselves down early in the third. The Falcons managed to roar back and take a slim lead but the D then let the Vikes back in front. It will come down to the heart of the Falcon D and the heart of Matt Ryan. Can they win it in 4 minutes? Short answer no. The Falcons D is pitiful and they are who I thought they were.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (27) – Tampa Bay has managed to get themselves off to a fair start and to be tied after a quarter isn’t bad. The Bucs managed to get the game to within a score as time was running out but Glennon just couldn’t make the connection and it seemed the Bucs were defeated. They played a tough D stand and got the ball back and Glennon DID it! What an amazing come from behind win! Well done!

21. Pittsburgh Steelers (12) – Pittsburgh has shown some heart to keep it close with Tampa and that is impressive seeing how flat they seem off the mark. The Steelers would have been lucky to win this game. Tampa gave them all they could take and the Steelers D collapsed and lost a game they should have won going away. A very ugly loss by a team that is just not very good.

22. St. Louis Rams (22) – On the bye and need to look deeply into themselves and try to determine if this D can do enough to allow a battered O to grow and make this team at least a shadow of an 8-8 team.

23. Minnesota Vikings (30) – Teddy Bridgewater is a revelation. I haven’t seen such a talent at QB since the 1998 Hey Day with Randall Cunningham. He is a leader, he throws a great ball and runs like the wind and slides like Russell Wilson. Good days are ahead with Bridgewater at the helm and they have a shot to win it today. The Vikes O has put the team well out in the lead and now it comes to the D to hold on. This game could be over if the Vikings can play D. The Vikings impressively stormed back into the lead with the brilliant play of Bridgewater and now with a late and gutsy 50+ yard FG they now have a two possession cushion to work with. Can they hold on? Not only hold on but put the game on ice. Brilliantly played. A fabulous win and the Bridgewater led Vikings are on the way!

24. New Orleans Saints (15) – It must be an internet rumor, that New Orleans has a Defense? I see no example of it on the field. They can’t stop the run, they can’t cover receivers…There doesn’t seem to be an offense good enough in the NFL that can win games with a team D that bad. The game was so over by the end of the first half. The Saints are in serious trouble and if they can’t play any D they will have a horrible year.

25. Carolina Panthers (21) – Carolina has yet to have a 1st down in the red zone and we now know why. They were inside the 20 and penaltied and sacked out to the 40. That is an ugly start to a game. No Offense but for one good pass and their D can’t seem to get on track. One is an accident and two is a trend and they are in a hole. The D can’t stop the Ravens and the O can’t score enough. Bad recipe. If the Panthers can’t turn this around in 3 weeks the season is done and their coach is gone.

26. Tennessee Titans (23) – They are so not good that they cannot afford to turn the ball over if they want to have a chance and it appears a 14 point hole in the first quarter is nigh on insurmountable. The hole gets deeper the D plays badly and their backup QB shows why he hasn’t played for 3 years. Tennessee has not much chance with Locker, no chance without him. The O and D line are stumbling and this team is poor and looking worse.

27. Washington Redskins (24) – Kirk Cousins didn’t have a great game. He was about average but he never looked like he wasn’t the right fit for that offense. The issue lay squarely on the right tackle (Tackling Dummy #74 I believe). Cousins was hit, pressured, forced…all night long. The running game couldn’t get on track as the Skin O-line just stunk. Add that to a very questionable D and it was lucky they didn’t allow 50 points. About as ugly as a loss can be and the Oline has to tighten up and the D has to try to figure out how to make a play or two.

28. Cleveland Browns (28) – On the bye and a team that is better than last year but still needs to learn how to win. It will be interesting to see this team if it can reach that critical stage.

29. Buffalo Bills (26) – Buffalo seems to have deep issues making their offense work. If it isn’t clock management and communication issues, it is drops. Somehow they got a lead at the half and now it is an open question if they can hold it for 30 minutes. The Bills D seems to show that they are getting winded by the long drives by Houston. Lucky for them the Texan O isn’t Peyton Manning esque. The Bills tried but they just can’t get anything out of their offense and down they went.

30. New York Jets (29) – The Jets are able to play good D and keep the game low scoring early as their offense continues to try to find any rhythm. The Jets need to take some shots on O to try to get back in the game. The Jets have issues scoring and it really seems to lay with Geno Smith. Doubt switching to Vick will help but I believe in the NY madhouse it is inevitable. The Jets need to switch DBs not QBs.

31. Jacksonville Jaguars (31) – Bortles has given the Jaguars something i haven’t seen since the days of Mark Brunell. They have a QB who is a born leader with a great arm and swift, smart legs. The Jags have managed to stake an early lead on the west coast through a pretty solidly played early part. The Jags have started to turn the ball over and that is my other rule…teams that are only ‘this’ good, cannot turn the ball over. The game is sliding out of control. The Jaguars cannot overstate the great step forward this loss was for them. Bortles gives this team hope and they are on the way back to respectability. It won’t be overnight but it will be coming sooner than people expect.

32. Oakland Raiders (32) – Oakland marched the field in England for a TD…maybe they need to play on another continent? Oakland takes the early lead on the ‘worst tackling’ award by being unable to bring down Wallace. Carr ok, the D is just horrible. The Raiders are just sad sack and without question the worst team in the NFL. An injury to Carr can’t help this mess.

There you have it!!! As always I just love any thoughts, comments, statements, arguments or agreements! Just enjoy my NFL weekly short stories and make me smile! I will also accept money, preferably tens and twenties!

MR N’s #NFL Week 3 Power Poll‏

NFL Power Rankings

1. Cincinnati Bengals (3) – One could almost say the Bengals are being mean by using trick plays to take a nice lead. That is pretty unsporting lol. Totally in control. When the O plays like this, with that D…there are few teams that can beat these Bengals. Brilliant game.

2. Arizona Cardinals (2) – Failing to get their D to stop the Niners when needed and the O isn’t getting results early. Cardinals needed to start faster than they did and now they must ask a backup QB to lead a division comeback. Going to be interesting to see. The Cards storm back to a 6 point lead, the D is playing strong and the O is on point. Can they hold the lead for 13 minutes now is the question. The Cardinals deserve amazing credit for coming from behind and laying a whipping on a tough division rival. Great win by what is a great team.

3. Philadelphia Eagles (4) – Got lucky with a ST TD but their D is playing like crap in the first half again. Eagles can score points, that is not in doubt, their D can’t really stop anyone – that is also not in doubt. Eagle D has come out fighting again and look strong early second half. Another stronger second half but they need to battle to get a win against a tough divisional opponent. Another come from behind win and they deserve credit but this script won’t win in the playoffs. Well done but they need to tighten up the D something quick.

4. Chicago Bears (5) – The BEARS came out strong and played a super first quarter. The holes on the O line began to show and the team was battered by a strong pass rush but the Bears were able to get a FG here and a TD there and with some timely D and solid special teams the BEARS won their second night time road game in a row. They face a tough home divisional game and if they win that one they will be well in control of their division…it is all about the Pack next.

5. New England Patriots (6) – Patriots seem to be taking it easy against Oakland and that isn’t a good idea. Pats lead but the play of Brady is again underwhelming and one wonders if he is past his prime? The Pats squeak out a win in a game that should have been a blowout. Ugly and they aren’t very good.

6. San Diego Chargers (7) – Superb early drive and playing good D on the road. The Chargers are playing good O, decent D and have a lead at the half. Early second half TD has basically put this game out of reach barring bad prevent D and turnovers. Terrific win on the road and the Chargers continue to excel against their very easy first half schedule.

7. Seattle Seahawks (10) – The Seahawk D is just not the LOB of last year. Nearly every 3rd down when they could force deep punts and change the field position is lost to conversions. Something is up. Thankfully for Seattle the Offense is operating effectively and the Hawks have a nice lead going into the half. The Seahawks need to see if they can use the run and burn the clock. The Seahawks have set it up to win, can their D make one more stop? No, they played like crap, had no pass rush, poor route coverage and deserve to lose. Look like Washington’s D. The D is only lucky that the O was able to win it in the first possession of OT. Not last year’s Seahawks at all.

8. Denver Broncos (1) – Although being held only to a field goal early the Denver O is trending the right way. They keep successfully converting 3rd downs. The Broncos can’t get the points they are used to, the D can’t seem to stop the Hawk O and now they must come back in a hostile environment. The Broncos are being historically bad on O and they are in trouble mid third quarter. The Broncos have under 1 minute get 8 points, can they? They can and it was a great drive against a now suspect D. They never got the ball in OT and that kept them from winning.

9. Indianapolis Colts (13) – Luck leading the Colts O easily against the Jag D and Richardson looks legit again. Complete, total, utter, unarguable domination. The Colts are just breezing through and their D isn’t being tested either. A superb game and they won it going away.

10. Atlanta Falcons (25) – A total domination. The Falcons destroyed a division rival and did it in neat fashion. Solid D, good O running and passing and good special teams. Much is made about Devin Hester…I know Hester intimately. He is not a very good WR and he is now only a KR who can make a big play once in a while. Congrats on the record. By the way, how much horse manure is it that the NFL (NO FUN LEAGUE) calls high stepping with a hand behind the head into the endzone TAUNTING??? That is beyond the stupidest rule about taunting yet and needs to be quickly crushed. That is simply players having fun. The Falcons did well. I don’t argue they can score points. I sincerely question their ability on D to make stops when needed. They are NOT a great team because they blew out Tampa but it was a great win.

11. Baltimore Ravens (16) – Baltimore is finding out early that this isn’t the usual Browns of the recent past. Baltimore using offensive weapons I don’t know and can’t pronounce to take the lead back (Tallia-what?Kuzcyk-Who?). Baltimore seems to have found a good RB and on the positive he hasn’t punched out any women so far. The Ravens indeed were the last team to score and they pulled out a gutsy divisional win.

12. Pittsburgh Steelers (20) – The Steelers played a great game and had it going on with a solid run game (LeVeon Bell is the Super-star weapon and they CANNOT afford to lose him ever) and even Big Ben was able to take advantage of Pittsburgh’s receivers running uncovered to toss a couple of TDs. The D and special teams played well and got key turnovers. A great win for them. I would like to see them do it again and having potentially lost 3 key defenders…this could be a very costly win.

13. Detroit Lions (15) – Stafford has turned it over twice and that of course is gold. The fact their D has provided 9 points has them in a first half lead but they are self defeating so far. The Lions march the field, look like they are about to take a big lead and another Golden turnover and the Lions can’t take control. Self defeating Same Old Sorry Ass Lions. Reggie Bush ran for a nice TD…he beat on the Packer Rush D like they were a one year old girl…oh wait, he only does that at home. Ugly but this will be a win that saves their season from being lost in week 3.

14. Dallas Cowboys (22) – DeadManCoaching seems to think he got a reprieve last week. The Cowboy D is horrible early and the big 0 the Cowboys put up in the first quarter kinda defines that O. That horrible coverage that led to the 2nd long Ram TD is just laughable (Merrill Hodge said in 4 weeks the Cowboys could look like a SuperBowl contender…really???). The Cowboys seem outmatched. Will need a serious half time pep talk from #DMC to make this a game. Dallas using it’s weapons to put them in good condition in a game they were well out of early. The Cowboy D managed to make one play to win the game for them. Everyone will speak about how great the Cowboys are and boy will they be wrong.

15. New Orleans Saints (24) – Saints out to a quick lead but that surprises no one. Saints D has bent and not broke twice and if they keep that up New Orleans will be ok. The Saints have a slim lead and now need to see if they can work the clock and seal the deal. Saints have enough edge with their running game to burn out the clock and get them their first win. I would personally be concerned about how hard it was for them to win what should have been a laugher.

16. Kansas City Chiefs (26) – Two relatively evenly matched teams battling it out early. The Chiefs managed to turn the battle in their favor and had a nice lead by the half. The Chiefs manage to hold a ten point lead but the Dolphins D is starting to make a mark in the second half. The Chiefs pulled away and won the game going away. Pretty amazing results considering how bad they looked week 2. We need to see which Chief D and O appear in week 4.

17. Green Bay Packers (12) – Turnovers are gold and the Lacy fumble put the Pack down early. Green Bay is close and they are a dangerous team when they are behind but close. The Packer O has been stifled by the Lions and the Pack now find themselves way down in the division and look like a team in trouble.

18. Houston Texans (11) – D holding G-men quiet early but little from the Fosterless O. Don’t really know what the Texans’ D was doing on the long 1st half drive for the Giants. They look completely beatable. Hmmm. What is going on with the Texan D and O? Fitzpatrick is showing clearly how turnovers are gold and this team isn’t in any way good enough to win a game when they turn the ball over. An ugly loss and now the wheels fall off a bad team.

19. San Francisco 49ers (17) – Off to a good start with the offense working and the D holding Arizona to field goals. Niners got about the best first half they could ask for and now they need to see if they can hold this first half lead. This just in, they can’t. The Niners O has gone self destruct mode and the one time they had the ball first and goal at the 5…they penaltied themselves into a 3rd and goal at the 34 and a missed FG. It’s kind of funny. A team of 2 halves. Once more super first half and a bad, undisciplined and mistake filled second half. Merge this team with Philadelphia and they would win every game 70-0 but the 49ers are just a sad sack 1-2.

20. Miami Dolphins (14) – The Dolphins O isn’t able to get any traction and their D was solid 1st Q but starting to fade late in the second. Tannehill is showing a lot of gumption and guts to make the plays as he has but they haven’t been able to fully solve the Chief D in the first half. This is practically a coming out party for Tannehill who is looking great today. Alas they couldn’t come back and the Offense just couldn’t make the necessary plays. The Dolphins need to win next week or their year may already be over.

21. Carolina Panthers (8) – Early on it was evident that the normally stout Panther D front 7 was not on it’s game as the Steeler line pushed them around from the get-go. Caaaaam looked more invalid than superman. Obviously his ribs and ankle are still troubling him. The appalling lack of offensive weapons showed its ugly head again and one really has to wonder how Carolina will score any points with that crew? Add to it golden turnovers from both Offense and Special Teams and the recipe for disaster is perfectly seasoned. The Panthers got smoked. They looked terrible. If their D isn’t going to play a rock solid 60 minutes they will be steamrolled by everyone they face. Ugly loss.

22. St. Louis Rams (21) – Austin Davis has the Ram O working and they look good. They seem to have gotten a nice match against a crappy D. Excellent O and a nice D off a golden Romo turnover has the Rams nicely out in front in the half. Ram D looking hollow early and are in danger of letting Dallas into a lead. Davis does all he can but drops are keeping Dallas in the game. The Ram D really is solely responsible for their losing this game. Had they played just their normal level of D and this game was there to be won.

23. Tennessee Titans (18) – Seem out of their depth already and it’s very early. Unable to do anything at all against the great Bengal D. Shutout at the half. Utterly destroyed. This isn’t even laughable anymore. No O, No D. No chance. Tampa Bay like.

24. Washington Redskins (23) – A workman like efficient first drive by Cousins that intermixed accurate passing and solid runs for a TD. Very un-RGIII like as it looked efficient. Another brilliant drive by Cousins and the Skin O is on a roll. Excellent O that has the Skins in the lead near the half. Seeing D’angelo Hall carted off the field isn’t a big deal as he covers as well on a cart as on the field. The Skin D has allowed Philly to roar back and now Cousins must try a comeback. Cousins leads them back for a tie and this will come down to the wire. In the end it was valiant but Cousins couldn’t get it done. RGIII knows too well how the D lets teams beat Washington.

25. New York Giants (31) – Give NY credit they are getting some rushing yards but not many points. Well I just witnessed the best offensive drive by Manning and the G-men and Cruz’s Salsa and if the NYG can do that steadily they will start to turn the ship around. Manning is having a great game, has reduced the turnovers to 0 and have a nice lead. Congrats to the Giants for winning a nice game. They played well on all phases and avoided the turnovers. Do it again.

26. Buffalo Bills (9) – Inability of the offense to quickly answer the Chargers could mean a long day for the Bills unless they get it going. Bills can’t seem to get anything going still and the time is ticking in the first half. Buffalo needs to come up with a new plan as they are lost against SD so far. The Bills seem to have no shot, remains to see if there is a miracle here. The Bills stunk and never had a hope.

27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (19) – I had no idea how bad this team is. To be totally fair, the problems the Bucs had on D were related to the problems on O. McCown and later Glennon both made some good throws that were simply dropped. There were key drops by RBs, WRs, TEs and at least 3 times in the first half when the game wasn’t totally out of reach – balls were dropped that would have been first downs, extending drives, giving D a much needed rest. About the D, to be completely gutted because McCoy was out is symtomatic of a serious problem. No team in football should be totally useless because one guy is out. As for the QB situation, once more I state that Glennon is their franchise QB and McCown is a very old, effective backup. It was said on Thursday night that Lovie Smith has a plan. He needs a new plan. The Bucs, who received a 50 burger on national tv, are a terrible team.

28. Cleveland Browns (27) – Hoyer is leading the Brown O effectively and they have a nice early lead. Brown D starting to fade with injuries mounting to key members of the line. Hoyer is leading a good fight and this game could come down to last score wins. Excellent effort for Cleveland, their D let them down at key moments and that was the difference.

29. New York Jets (28) – Geno Smith is a lot better than he was last year but he still has painful growth to get through. He tossed a huge pick six, made some over throws, bad decisions and poor clock management. The Jets have a solid front 7 and a TERRIBLE secondary. They have little offense and are a team in trouble.

30. Minnesota Vikings (29) – The Vikings unable to get anything going early against the questionable Saint D. Does Cassel’s limp mean it could soon be time for a Bridge over Minnesota’s Trouble Water?? Bridgewater in and early returns are pretty positive, he doesn’t seem out of his level and his legs give the Vikes a new angle not seen since I don’t know when. Bridgewater is nifty in the pocket and he throws a nice ball but sadly he can’t catch what he throws. The Vikings D can feel pretty good about holding the Saints to so few points. All in all the Vikings played as good as they could in this loss.

31. Jacksonville Jaguars (30) – Their D can’t stop the run or pass in early going. Henne providing his usual 0 offense (BORTLES!!). It has become a joke and Henne really needs to step aside. D is exhausted already and they can’t stop Indy. The Jags brought in Bortles and he put up some points. He needs a full week of practice and perhaps the Jags can get this turned around.

32. Oakland Raiders (32) – Derek Carr seems to be a well balanced QB and he is doing what he can to keep the Raiders in the game early. The Raiders are still in the match which is a bit of a surprise. The Raiders really played well and Derek Carr is amazing and that last pick wasn’t on him. Good game on O and D.

There you have it! My rule this year is if a team loses, no matter how well they play…they drop 1 and an ugly win means up 1. Get blasted or blast someone and they can move more. I think this is equitable in the parity filled NFL. If you win, you are better than those that lose.

As always I love to get all thoughts, comments, arguments and agreements! It is a lot to read so I just appreciate someone reading my weekly NFL short stories! I will happily take a contract offer from ESPN.com or money, preferably tens and twenties!

MR N’S #NFL Week 2 Power Poll‏

NFL Power Rankings

1. Denver Broncos (2) – Denver makes it look easy to start. Funny tho the Bronco D looks really beatable and the Chief O is pushing them around as they march over the field. Manning is getting it done but it isn’t pretty so far. The Broncos managed to hold onto a lead in what has become a tough division battle. Denver’s D is looking inconsistent, poorly disciplined and not very good. This makes me question how good the vaunted D is (and I started them in fantasy). They managed to get a very ugly win. Yay?

2. Arizona Cardinals (3) – Leading early with effective play from the solid D and a vet back up QB. The Cardinals D must take a long look at itself since it has now allowed Eli Manning to drive twice for TDs. That is not good for a D that is supposed to be explosive. Can the Cardinal D hold a late lead is the question. The answer is yes, the Cards get another come from behind win and with a backup QB and on the road on the East coast is pretty impressive.

3. Cincinnati Bengals (5) – Cincy would have scored an opening drive TD if Dalton could make a pass in the clutch. Dalton at least can hand the ball off effectively. Ugly but a first half lead. Cincy is simply dominating the Falcon O with good D and now starting to make the game a laugher. The Bengal D is for real and makes life easier for Dalton to be effective. Terrific win at home. The Bengals look for real.

4. Philadelphia Eagles (6) – The Eagles took a page out of the Colts playbook for the second week in a row and totally stunk out the first half. The Eagles D has issues that need to be addressed if they wish to play with the big boys in the NFL but their O is legit. Sproles is the little engine that does and the Eagles roared back to a nice win on the road and are off to a nice start this year.

5. Chicago BEARS (12) – The BEARS played a pretty terrible first half, the O line couldn’t block the D line couldn’t tackle and the secondary was exposed. Suddenly in the second half Cutler was on fire, the O was explosive, the D was all over the field and young Fuller was a ball hawking machine. An incredible win that they never should have won and now their season is back on track.

6. New England Patriots (13) – Pats have admirably stormed back to take an earlyish lead. Pats are tearing up the Viking D and now it will be up to the Pat D to hold another lead. The Pats blew the Vikes away for a nice win. Not surprising considering the circumstances but a good win none the less.

7. San Diego Chargers (18) – San Diego’s O is off to a good start against the LOB. San Diego O is making the Hawk D look bad in the first half. The Chargers are blowing away the Seahawks and that is pretty amazing to watch. About the best 1st half they could have hoped for. Do they have 30 more good minutes? The nitwit color man of CBS tried to say how rugged Ryan Matthews is as an RB, not 10 min later he is carted off the field like the crystal chandelier injury prone guy he is. SD is trying to eat clock. Can their D stop the Seahawks from coming all the way back? It did, great D play and solid O and the Bolts are now nicely in the win column.

8. Carolina Panthers (21) – No surprise Carolina is scoreless early. Hapless Panther O led by the immobile Cam isn’t threatening the Lions very much. Amazingly the Panthers have somehow turned on the O with Cam leading the way to take a solid lead late in the 4th. Wow. A surprisingly solid win. Well done.

9. Buffalo Bills (26) – Buffalo may regret having a great shot at a TD and getting only 3. If I was Miami I would cover Sammy Watkins. Special Teams is a key part of the game and Buffalo is dominating in it today. Buffalo has to respond to the Fin TD or face a strong challenge. The Bills won on all phases of the game and are a good 2-0.

seahawks SB 48 champs

10. Seattle Seahawks (1) – Going to be interesting to see Seattle deal with a team that, on the surface, isn’t intimidated to face them. The Seahawk D is being pushed around on the road and looks pedestrian. Seattle must have a change of attitude in the 2nd half if they hope to come out on top. The Seahawks don’t seem into the game into the 4th quarter. The big question is, can they drive for the lead in the 4th quarter? The answer is no. The O looked flat the whole game, the D couldn’t stop the Chargers and they lose ugly and by my definition they are no longer the best team in the NFL.

11. Houston Texans (23) – I know Houston lacks receiving weapons but calling on JJ Watt to catch tds is odd to watch. Houston looks like a team of all stars. People will be hyping this team but wait til they face a team that can play mediocre O and D…Houston continues to take great advantage of golden Raider turnovers. A solid road win but the level of opposition really has to balance how much you take from this win.

12. Green Bay Packers (15) – Rodgers has to figure out how to work with little time. It appears the issues with the O line make it very hard for GB to put up any offense. Giving the Pack credit they aren’t giving up but they have a long road to go to come back and their D must stop the Jets. The D is doing better and the O is starting to roll late. The Pack are all the way back in a superb come back. Terrific comeback, a great win for the Packers and now we see how they do in a key early season divisional matchup next week.

13. Indianapolis Colts (7) – The Colts came out fast for once and played a heck of a decent 1st half. Amazing to actually see Richardson running for long gains and looking like an NFL running back again. Andrew Luck had it going and did just about enough to win. Unfortunately in the second half the Colts D once more let the team down and they lost a close one and now are staring up out of an 0-2 hole.

14. Miami Dolphins (9) – Injuries and inconsistency on O and mistakes on Special teams have the Dolphins in trouble early. The Dolphin offense seems as flat this first half as it did last week. Wallace’s great catch shows the Dolphins are not going away and will keep this game tight. A tough division loss that reduces the glory from the week 1 win.

15. Detroit Lions (14) – – A little surprised the Lions held scoreless into 2nd quarter. Lions finally got a TD and now need to see if they can build on it in the second half. Losing badly with little offense against Carolina is at least unexpected and at most embarrassing. Now Stafford must find 2 TDs in under 8 minutes against a tough D. The Lions managed 3 points and an ugly loss. Not impressive at all.

16. Baltimore Ravens (20) – The Ravens rallied in the face of public protest and while being surrounded by a very ugly and disgusting incident and they got a great division win. Flacco isn’t the greatest QB in the world but if he is not pressured at all he can pick a D apart. The Raven D seems to play a touch dirty but they do have a pass rush. I question their ability to stop a good Offense but they should be able to beat up Pittsburgh and Cleveland when they face them. A middling team but they played well.

injury report

17. San Francisco 49ers (4) – The 49ers got off to a fast start and looked in control in their home opener. The D then collapsed in the second half and the O lost their ability and Kaepernick showed again that he still has maturity issues. His multiple turnovers (which are gold) and his tantrum led to a bad loss.

18. Tennessee Titans (10) – What the heck happened to the Tennessee O and D line? They are at home for goodness sake!!! Jake Locker’s early line is 3/10 with a pick. hmmm. The Titans just looked flat at home and got whipped and now I wonder if the Titans are any good so I need to see further evidence.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (16) – Moved the ball early for a score and then allowed one. Is this going to be a barnburner? The Lightning delay turned this into a low scoring struggle but the cagey vet McCown is doing just about all he can to keep the Bucs in the lead. The Buc D and special teams couldn’t seal the deal and down they went. And now it’s a short week against a desperate division opponent. Good luck.

20. Pittsburgh Steelers (17) – The Steelers, upon detailed and close inspection, do not appear to be any good. They seem to have no significant weapons in the receiving game except for Brown and he gets doubled a lot. The O line has great trouble protecting Ben, Ben is more statue like now and can’t seem to move around in the pocket. The D, despite adding youth, still seems old. They can’t stop the run, they have no pass rush and they have trouble covering. LeVeon Bell is the lone highlight of this team. Outscored 50-9 in the last 6 quarters of 2 division games, this team needs to get something worked out before facing the Panther D in another night game or it will be very ugly.

21. St. Louis Rams (24) – Supposed to be all D but the early scoring looks otherwise. Austin Davis is managing the game as best as he can. Turnovers may be gold as a key fumble has put them behind Tampa. Amazingly the never quit Rams managed to come from behind and grab a road win. What could they do with a QB? To be fair, Austin Davis was pretty solid!

22. Dallas Cowboys (27) – Murray proves early turnovers are gold but Dallas can’t bench Murray, they have no other legit RB. Only Dallas can take a first and 10 on the 10 and make it 4th and 30 on the 30. Way to make a shot at 7 = 3. If gimpy Romo can get the ball to Dez Bryant he will be successful. The Cowboys are showing a lot of heart on the road. A very good win by the Boys, so let’s see them do this again.

23. Washington Redskins (28) – A total game changer is RGIII going out hurt. Cousins is the QB who can win for Washington and now the Skins have hope. 2 Terrific drives have the Cousins led Skins out ahead early. Cousins is creating what may be the ugliest QB controversy since Montana/Young. The Skins look great under Cousins and look like a horrible team with RGIII. hmmm. Watching Cousins reminds me of young Brady. He just has it. Either Washington IRs RGIII or finds a trading partner. They have a franchise QB and it’s Kirk Cousins. An amazing win that shows a poor D can be excited by an effective O with a great QB performance.

24. New Orleans Saints (8) – What is up with these Saints?? Can anyone actually say they saw the Saints being shut out for most of the first half by the Browns? Graham is just too big to cover in the redzone and he is the difference in the Saints comeback in the third quarter. The Saints have managed to somehow get a slim one point lead and then their D just choked and got ran over for a long drive and they suck and they lose.

25. Atlanta Falcons (19) – The Falcons O sleeping through another first half. The Falcon D was bend not break until they broke and trail at the half. Note to Atlanta’s D, if you bring all out pressure you better get to the QB or you end up with a WR jogging alone into the endzone like Sanu did. Redzone turnovers are gold made of .99999 pure and Matt Ryan just killed the Falcons hopes in the 3rd quarter. Ryan being brutalized by the Bengal D. Turnovers, poor D, no O. What a sad sack team of old players.

26. Kansas City Chiefs (22) – Amazing to see an NFL QB run three yards past the Line of scrimmage and still toss a pass for a penalty lol. Solid Chief O early which is a bit of a surprise. The Chief O has been able to move 20 to 20 but are having issues putting up points. The Chiefs have been able to use a gutsy running game to bring the game into a one possession game. Can they come all the way back, it remains to be seen. Heck of a try but they just couldn’t do it but I give them credit for giving their all.

27. Cleveland Browns (31) – Excellent D early, Browns look surprisingly like an NFL team early. Browns seem to have lost the momentum and need to recapture it or this game is going to be over fast in the second half. Never thought Cleveland would be in the game in the 4th so win or lose they have done well to do so. The Browns gave their all but in the end Hoyer led the team to a game winning drive. Superbly done.

28. New York Jets (25) – Blazing Jet D has then ahead early. Geno Smith throws a nice deep ball. The Jets are off to a big lead and on the road in GB it is impressive. Solid Jet D, it looks really good. The Jet D seemed to go back onto their back-feet and that let the Packers role back into a close game. The Jets now trail and their D is losing control and having a key D lineman tossed out isn’t going to help. Smith throws a nice deep ball it just appears his WRs suck. Trailing by a TD inside the last 2 minutes the Jets appear desperate and they lose ugly a game they had in control. Ugly.

29. Minnesota Vikings (26) – The Vikings came out early and got a quick score on a nice drive. Cassel turnovers are golden and not like Golden Gopher ish. Cassel is trying to knit a sweater with golden turnover wool and the Vikes have little hope beating the Pats if they played disciplined, perfect ball. Matt Khalil is supposed to be the franchise LT and today he looks like a tackling dummy. The Vikings just got schooled and now must try to retool their team in a dire situation. If they go forward without AP for any length of time, this team is in more trouble than they were with him.

30. Jacksonville Jaguars (29) – The Jags D continues to lack the fire it had in the first half of week 1. To be unable to score against the Redskins’ laughable D almost certainly means it’s Bortles time in Jacksonville. Still think the inabiliity of Jacksonville’s O to score on Washington indicts the entire scheme run by Henne. This is a bad O. They haven’t played well since the first 2 quarters of week 1 and are a team that looks like it needs a boost. Bortles! Bortles, BORTLES!

31. New York Giants (30) – Eli still knows how to toss picks early. Called a franchise QB early, he WAS a franchise QB, he isn’t anymore. Giants putting together a decent late first half drive. And it ended in a TD, so they can score one every now and then! Self defeating Giants have dug themselves a late hole with key turnovers and penalties and now must battle to try to win a game. Brutal clock management and a questionable 4th down try means the G-men are dead. Mistakes from top to bottom. They had a shot and self destructed.

32. Oakland Raiders (32) – The Raider D looks terrible still. The complete lack of O is startling. This could be a long day for Oakland. Derek Carr tossed his first (but not his last) pick and it is the rookie mistake for a QB that isn’t surprising. As I said about Minnesota…Oakland isn’t good enough to beat teams when playing perfect, turnover free football. Turning it over multiple times just leads to very ugly losses. This was a very ugly loss. There were 2 positives…Carr continues to look like the right choice at QB and RunDmC is looking like a solid RB again. Otherwise this was an ugly loss.

There you have it! As always I love to have any thoughts, comments, arguments or agreements…just enjoy my NFL ramblings please and let me know if you disagree or agree! And I would happily take money, preferably tens and twenties!

MR N’s #NFL Week 1 Power Poll‏

NFL Power Rankings

1. Seattle Seahawks – (1) They dominated the Packers in a way that surprised me. Watching the game I saw issues with Seattle being unable to stop GB from achieving first downs on third down situations but that flaw led only to 10 points thru 3 quarters and 7 of the Pack 16 points came from them taking advantage of a turnover on a punt. The Hawks O is fierce with Wilson/Lynch/Harvin and a superb line. If the D just plays like that, they are ready to repeat.

2. Denver Broncos (3) – The Broncos seemed to be in cruise control from the start, they dominated the first half but were somehow not very prolific or impressive. Something seemed to be lacking. Whatever strength the D showed in the first half was exposed as an illusion as the Colts ran the field several times in the second half. They barely got out with a win and that kind of play won’t do when they face Seattle.

3. Arizona Cardinals (6) – The Cardinals may have been carrying the burden of pre-season expectations as they stumbled out of the gate against the Chargers. Once more turnovers are gold and mistakes in special teams can be costly. The Cardinals did manage a nice late rally and took advantage of mistakes to get a late win. It was ugly but a win is a win in this league.

4. San Francisco 49ers (8) – 21 first quarter (basically) points by SF shows that what I believed is true. A team who’s offense is struggling just needs to face the Cowboy D for 15 minutes to get it rolling. They took advantage of 4 huge golden turnovers and won a game. Need to see them play a real team before determining how good they actually are.

5. Cincinnati Bengals (9) – Andy Dalton looks unfamiliar and a touch out of sync and that’s a bad 100 million dollar look. Pitching a shutout for the 1st half is great for the D but potentially losing Burfict on D is very, very bad. A good win in that they managed to hold on to take a key division match up and do it on the road.

6. Philadelphia Eagles (11) – Turnovers are gold. Do they have any D??? When blocking A FG is your offensive highlight you have real issues. I give Chip Kelly full credit for fixing the problems during the halftime and ripping the Jags a new one. A quality team win.

7. Indianapolis Colts (2) – One would have thought that the Colts would have learned from last year that the old script doesn’t work. Last year they would stumble through the first half and then rage back in the second for a come from behind win. They tried that in the playoffs and eventually they lost as good teams don’t let them come back. The Colts did that against Denver and sucked early, were strong late but Denver was too good to let them come all the way back. Indy has to start playing well in the first half or this season ends in disaster too.

8. New Orleans Saints (4) – New Orleans O looks in mid season form with Brees firing on all cylinders early. Evidently the Saints D forgot to come out of locker room after half. And they continue to stay in the locker room and let the Falcons run roughshod all over them. This loss lays completely on their D, it played terribly in the second half.

9. Miami Dolphins (14) – Miami has enough issues playing against the Pats to have mistake filled football. They keep this up and they will be blown out. Amazingly in the second half Tannehill was impressive which is something the Dolphins desperately needed. A great win for the Dolphins and for now they can build on a solid division win.

10. Tennessee Titans (20) – Note to Jake Locker, if you stand still long enough the D will sack you. For having drafted Bishop Sankey so high, he is remarkably not on the field. Brilliant O line and D line play. The Titans look like the mirror image of their early success last year and got a great road win.

11. Chicago Bears (5) – Bear D imminently beatable early. Turnovers are gold and being down big early is a bad start to what is supposed to be a promising season. They need to wake up and tear up the 2nd half or this season is already in trouble. Turnovers are so gold and losing this game is just inexcusable and the Bears should be ashamed.

12. New England Patriots (7) – Brady looks smooth and the Pat O is having their way early against what should be a tough Fin D. Bad sign for the Pat D is when the Fish tie the game and the Pat DBs are arguing who should cover Wallace instead of covering Wallace. The Pats D was really vaunted by many experts. I had my doubts and they were proven out. A bad loss on the road. What will Belicheck do to come back from this?

13. Detroit Lions (23) – The Lions offense was able to roll, aided by having Megatron left basically uncovered. There still seem to be moments of undisciplined behavior but the Lions were able to use solid pass rush, great run stuffing D and a blazing passing attack to win an easy one against a very poor opponent.

14. Green Bay Packers (10) – I was the only one who had issues with their D and boy was that proved out. They can’t stop a run around the edges or up the gut and they can’t cover…Clay Matthews guesses every down and often wrong and is exposed. I thought at least they had blazing O but they were stifled by the LOB and losing Bulaga and having a Lacy Concussion. They are not on the road to the Superbowl as Al Michaels suggested…they are now on the road to 7-9.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers (18) – Totally destroying the supposedly solid Brown D and could be making it Johnny Cleveland time earlier than thought. One would think Pittsburgh would realize that prevent D only prevents you from winning. Congrats on a late win but don’t go thinking this means you are good as you nearly lost to THAT Cleveland team and at home too. Play like this on Thursday and the Ravens will kill them.

16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (15) – Lovie so far has inspired his up and coming Bucs to nothing. Awe inspired anyone? In the end all that was shown in their home opener is that McCown and Smith are poor clock managers, that starting McCown was a monumental mistake and that the Buc D isn’t what people think they are. A loss well earned.

17. San Diego Chargers (16) – The Chargers get credit for taking a nice lead over a tough team on the road. The issue was that when the game was on the line they couldn’t do the simple thing – snap the ball – and that effectively led to their D letting the Cardinals run the length of the field to defeat them. The Chargers need to see if they can tighten this up but they face the BEAST this week. Good luck.

18. Atlanta Falcons (21) – Uphill battle trying to play shootout with the Saints. Came out of halftime on fire and ran the field for 7. The Falc’s deserve credit for making a late surge and even staking themselves to a 3rd quarter lead. Can their D hold it is the question. No. Have to give the Falcons credit, they didn’t give up and Matt Ryan again comes from behind and is starting to look more like an elite QB every time he does that. A nice win.

19. Baltimore Ravens (17) – The other 100 million Dollar QB can’t get anything going early vs the Bengals. Ravens are desperate and need to get some traction. Perhaps Kubiak is bringing his ineffective Texan O to the Ravens. The Ravens unveiled a Ray Lewis statue outside their stadium…what they need is to unveil him on the field – that’s what they need. The Ravens made it close but their O needs to be more consistent and that starts Thursday night.

20. Carolina Panthers (22) – Derek Anderson’s play in the early stages is making a lot of teams wonder why they didn’t sign him as a backup (hello St. Louis?). The Panthers took early control and only through playing prevent D for the entire second half did this game become closer than it actually was. A surprising number of points scored by a team with little or no O and they got a nice win.

21. Kansas City Chiefs (12) – Vaunted Chief D looks like they can be pushed around especially when the Titans do it to them at home in the first half. Note to Alex Smith, if you stand still long enough the D will sack you. So much for KC. If they can’t win this game at home they have a lot of problems and will now almost certainly be at home come January. Their schedule gets terrible and they just lost one they had to win to be at least 8-8.

22. Houston Texans (28) – Slow start but got something going late in the first half and a lead could be all their D needs to sneak them a win. Well done Houston but it will remain to be seen if they are any good on O as they only beat a really bad team.

23. St. Louis Rams (13) – D is trying hard but the O has them on the field all the time. The lack of O is going to hurt this team severely. You know Hill is bad at QB when Austin Davis takes over for him. On the positive they won’t be shut out this game! Just so bad that not even a good D can save them. This could be a very long, bad year unless they can find a QB.

24. New York Jets (26) – Geno Smith spends a lot of time running around on every play which is fun to watch but not so productive. Smith is looking much more mature and more in control in just his first game this year. Sadly all that can be lost with just a key mistake or two and he nearly lost to Oakland with a classic error. Geno Smith is the leader of this team and he and the D did a nice job of getting a home win, Smith just has to tighten up his mistakes still.

25. Minnesota Vikings (29) – The Vikes D was performing very well against a questionable offense but Cassel isn’t setting the Walls very high in Minny. The Vikes O took advantage of a turnover (which is gold) and a growing weary Ram D to get up a nice lead. Putting up a 3 possession lead almost ices the game for a pretty effective Vike team with just 3 quarters through. No one expected them to blow out the Rams but their D and O combined to dominate. Excellent game.

26. Buffalo Bills (30) – Pretty impressive offense on the road early has the Bills well out in front. The Bills brought their A game, their D was effective, they won the turnover battle and got a great win on the road.

27. Dallas Cowboys (23) – Early thoughts? The Cowboys suck. Romo tossed 3 more picks and looks still troubled by back issues. The D is horrible and only by getting a couple of late scores did it look less like the blowout it was. Garrett is now referred to only as #DMC (DeadManCoaching).

28. Washington Redskins (19) – The Washington O under RGIII isn’t very impressive but their D is worse. A pretty poor first half. The Redskins issue seems to simply be they are not as good as everyone, including me, thought they were. I expected bad D but the O is struggling mightily and they are being pushed around and look bad. The Skins are a team at a crossroads and it’s only week 1.

29. Jacksonville Jaguars (27) – Solid early D and advantageous O gives them a surprising early lead. “Chad Henne is picking apart the Eagle D” Hunh?? What planet is this and where is the simply mediocre Eagle D? The Jags had 30 good minutes of football. Someone needs to explain the game is 60 minutes long. As ugly a second half as good as their 1st half was.

30. New York Giants (26) – Having watched that game one can’t help but wonder if Eli shouldn’t have hung them up after last year? He is so out of sorts with that complicated O that he can’t just settle down and lead his team. The D can tackle when they get to the ball. The problem is their containment has holes, the linebackers can’t seem to either rush or cover and the secondary is but a dream. Unless they do some major improvements on both sides of the ball, this will be a very long and sad season for the Giants.

31. Cleveland Browns (31) – With their D unable to stop the Steelers it doesn’t give the O a shot to get anything going in first half. The Browns are just putrid at tackling and that is shocking. Hoyer should let the running QB plays stay with the Bench jockey. But on the positive it is Hoyer’s poise that has led Cleveland all the way back to a tie late in the game. Cleveland gave their all and if they had any sort of D they might have won this game.

32. Oakland Raiders (32) – Derek Carr got a TD drive early and they are playing well better than the Raiders normally do on the East Coast. Alas Carr doesn’t play D but neither does the Raider D. They could lead the league in missed tackles (though Cleveland wants that belt too). Carr did a good job but the D is just horrid.

There you have it, as always I love every thought, comment, argument, agreement, just enjoy someone skimming over my thoughts! I will also take money, preferably tens and twenties!
