MR N’s #NFL Week 8 Power Poll‏

NFL Power Rankings

1. Denver Broncos (3) – The Broncos came out a little slow but had history to make and Manning was up to the task. He took apart the Chargers D, even was able to hit receivers when they were effectively double covered. A masterful offensive performance with a workman like D that was enough to give them another 14-point win. Now ten days to prepare for going to New England.

2. Arizona Cardinals (6) – The Cardinals are battling but this is going to be a 60 minute war. The injuries are taking a toll here as these two physical teams clash hard every down. It continues in a tight tie and will likely go down to the wire. The Cards O has been having trouble scoring in the second half and a fumble has put the Cards in a bad way and now the D has to respond or this game could be getting out of hand. An incredibly gutsy win for Arizona. Palmer went the length of the field for the leading touchdown and the D, especially the secondary, made the plays it had to make and they won. What a superb team this group is. It reminds me of the Patriots of the early oughts. They are better as a team than as individuals.

3. New England Patriots (8) – Excellent start on O and D. Brady in command and solid D has the game in hand early. The Pats have used excellent passing O and good D to rip apart the Bears and surge to a 5 TD lead and the game is effectively over. Excellent game by NE. Let’s see how they do against Denver next Sunday…

4. Kansas City Chiefs (11) – KC seems to need another bye to figure out how to get some production out of their offense in the first quarter. The Chiefs O has begun to pore it on and the game is quickly getting out of hand and now the Chiefs just need to use their feisty D to keep this game in control. The Chiefs have used some good O to take total control of this game and this will be a solid win and will actually put the Chiefs back in the conversation for a wild card. They do have a tough second half Sked ahead of them.

5. Cincinnati Bengals (14) – The Bengals got an early TD and now need to try to build on this early success. Excellent D played all game into the 3rd quarter and a good pick-off by the Bengals led to a quick 7 and now the Bengals are in better control of this game. Andy Dalton is potentially going to wear the dunce cap for his stupid failure to simply take a sack, instead he gets hit, fumbles and set up a Baltimore lead taking TD. He went from goat to hero and led the Bengals to a game winning TD. Not a pretty win but one they had to have to give them a shot at the division.

6. Seattle Seahawks (15) – The question has to be asked, does the Seahawk D just suck now? Are they simply a farce that got lucky using mirrors last year? The Seahawks are holding Carolina to FGs early but they need to get their O going too. The Seahawks keep getting held to field goals and are still looking to get seven somehow. The Seahawks manage, under the inspired leadership of Russell Wilson, to grab a very small late lead. Can they hold it for 45 seconds? They finally played good D. I guess one minute of good D when it counts is better than the 59 minutes of questionable D.

7. Detroit Lions (12) – Started a game way too early and evidently way early for the Lions. They came out flat on O and D and were in a deep three TD hole before you could say tea and crumpets. The Lions did battle back to bring it very close late in the game and in the end it came down to a FG chance. One wonders really, why Atlanta called a time out at 31 second left. A messy end with another chance for Detroit to pull one out…and they did. This team is a BUTT UGLY, terrible 6-2. I try to say a team is as good as their record but this team is a 2-6 masquerading as 6-2.

8. Green Bay Packers (4) – The Packers came out and were able to move the ball comfortably between the 20’s and got a TD but their O wasn’t firing on all cylinders in the first half but the D played alright. The second half brought a defense that failed to come out of the locker room and the second of 2 picks from Rodgers led to the Pack being blown out. A shattering loss and with Rodgers hurting his hamstring…one wonders how relaxed he felt after that?

9. Baltimore Ravens (5) – The Ravens are struggling early to get any O going but their D is fine. The Ravens had some success keeping the game close but right after halftime Flacco tossed a golden turnover and boom they are now chasing a team who is playing good D against them. The Ravens got a key late turnover and now have a slim lead and need their D to hold it for 4 minutes. This just in, they couldn’t and they lose a close one. The Ravens are still in first in their division but the division is a bit more wide open now.

10. San Francisco 49ers (10) – They were on the bye and they have a shot to have a solid second half with key players coming back from suspension and injury. Their best may be yet to come.

11. Dallas Cowboys (1) – Everything nice I said about Dallas…I take back. Only a team that is a joke and a shell of a good team could mail it in and lose to a horrible team…AT HOME. The injury to Romo should not have mattered. There was no way on God’s green earth they should have lost this game. Lose it they did and they better play extra hard next week . A terrible game.

12. Miami Dolphins (13) – The Dolphins struggled mightily on O but managed to use Golden turnover to get a lead. Not playing great but able to take advantage of the rookie QB and have a decent lead. The Dolphins are poring it on and I give them full credit for this. The Dolphins are nicely out in front and if they hold on, this could be considered a winning streak. It is a winning streak and now let’s see the Dolphins beat someone.

13. Indianapolis Colts (2) – The Colts seem to have recovered their old script and are mailing it in early. They are behind a bumbleeeee colored Steelers and need to wake up. It appears the Colts have declined to wake up and will have to come back from nearly 21 down in the second half to pull out a win. An absolutely horrible 30 minute performance that they should be ashamed of. The Colt O line is continuing to be a shadow of itself in the 2nd half and this hole the Colts are in is pretty deep and time is ticking. The Colts offense gave their all and got within 8 at one point. Unfortunately the Colt D played like utter crap and allowed a really sad type of O to score 50+ on them. A beyond ugly loss. This should have been played on halloween as the Colts were like a horror show.

14. Philadelphia Eagles (7) – The Eagles are in a slug fest with a seemingly even ability opponent. Will be fun to watch. The Eagles keep challenging but can’t get many points. The Eagle O line is protecting Foles but only just barely as the Cardinal rush keeps getting close and closer. The Eagles got a TD to take a lead and the D is starting to get turnovers and that could be the difference in a close game like this. That TD led to Philly taking the lead but the Eagle D couldn’t stop Arizona and then Foles got them to within inches of winning but it was a heart breaking loss. Game effort but they were just ‘that’ much not good enough.

15. Cleveland Browns (16) – A slow start and for the sake of his sanity amongst the slowly growing calls for Manziel…Hoyer needs to put a whupping on the Raiders. Hoyer is in the lead at the half but he needs to get a lot more offense if he wants to not be harrassed out of his job. The Brown O is just scuffling and having a world of difficulty getting any sort of production against the Raider D. Again, let me repeat that…they can’t seem to make any yards playing against OAKLAND’s D. The Browns finally were able get their TD and they won this game with room to spare. Not pretty but the Browns are still alive in the AFC wild card and not out of it for their division yet.

16. Pittsburgh Steelers (17) – The Steelers have started out well and need to keep up the pressure as the king of comebacks is facing them. I have to give this Steeler squad a lot of credit. They can only operate their game plan as hard as they can and they are whipping the Colts. They are beating them a new one and well done. Now their aged D has to hold down what should be a hard charging Colt comeback. The Steelers keep putting up points and the Steeler D is applying great pressure. If they can keep this up, this will be a signature win for this team. What a great win for Pittsburgh. They scorched for amazing points and their D did what it could to only allow about 5 tds but that was enough for the win. Well done, but don’t start counting on the D.

17. San Diego Chargers (9) – The Chargers had a short week with a tough divisional road game. I give their D full credit for playing a tough 1st quarter. They held Denver to two successive three and outs. They could not maintain that and that is not unexpected. Rivers and the offense got a bit of scoring but not enough to make a difference and they lost a game that no one thought they would win.

18. Houston Texans (19) – The Texan D is holding their own against the rookie and have kept the Texan woe-be-gotten O in the game early. The Texans have taken advantage of turnovers and have used their O to get a very nice lead as the game heads into the 4th quarter. The Texans won this one handily and are now playing decent football when they don’t turn it over a zillion times. Good win.

19. New Orleans Saints (21) – The Saints came out and were able to move the ball comfortably between the 20’s and got a TD but their O wasn’t firing on all cylinders in the first half but the D played alright. The second half brought an excited defense that took advantage of 2 key turnovers and Brees tore up the Packer D and the Saints ran away with it. Now they have a shot to win another on Thursday and be in control of their division ala Indy a couple of weeks back.

20. Buffalo Bills (22) – To no one’s surprise, even Kyle Orton was able to take the ball and score on a horrid Jet D. They jumped up to a nice lead and that has inspired Jet insanity. The Bills have dominated the first half with solid O and ok D. Can they hold it against an O led by an injury prone hasbeen? We will see. They keep getting threes and stretching out the lead. The big question is can the Bill D hold a double digit lead for a victory? The Bills have pulled away and have gone to NYC (ok Jersey) and blown the sad sack Jets away. Solid win.

21. New York Giants (20) – On the bye. This team has played great and terrible. They need to decide who they are as they start the second half. They could make the playoffs or be eliminated in 3 weeks.

22. Washington Redskins (24) – The Skins played like a team possessed…with football players. How unusual for them. They were pushed around by the Cowboy line but the they managed to hang around in the game and Colt McCoy was able to keep the mistakes to a minimum and the D played arguably their best game this year. In a mind numbing shock the Redskins won. I don’t know how and don’t expect this to be repeated this season. This was a great game for them.

23. St. Louis Rams (18) – Rams got an early lead but Davis is also learning that turnovers are gold. Troubles on Offense are added to trouble playing within the rules by the D and the penalties have helped the Rams to fall deep in a hole. The Rams have let the game completely get away and one has to wonder if Fisher is now on the hot seat as his team just slides into oblivion in their division. The Rams never seem to have been in this game and now their team is at a bad crossroads.

24. Minnesota Vikings (30) – The Vikings are having great trouble getting any O but their D is off to it’s customary strong start. The Vikings have managed to work out a FG and a TD and now their D has a 10 point lead to hang on to. The D couldn’t hold the lead but their O led by a gutsy Bridgewater got the tie and they got a great OT win. Way to go Minnesota. They need to get their D in order to keep this momentum rolling.

25. Carolina Panthers (25) – The Panther O is marching all over the field on what should be a good D. The Panthers are playing decent D but need to get 7’s on O not 3s. Panther early O success has stilled and the Panthers are in another tight one…tied in the third quarter. The lack of getting touchdowns have put the Panthers behind late and they need a miracle to win this one now. They didn’t get one and maybe people will stop talking about this team as good.

26. Jacksonville Jaguars (23) – Blake Bortles is the future for this team but he really needs to work on his vision downfield. It hurts Jag opportunities and leads to pick sixes. Good D early though. The D continues to play well and the O continues to stumble and they need points quickly. They aren’t getting the points and they keep allowing points and the Jags keeps sliding down and are almost certainly playing for a draft pick now. The Jags are not as totally bad as their record. They need to keep their head up and keep trying.

27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (26) – No O, ok D…not really a recipe for success early today. The Bucs are having a lot of trouble simply getting across midfield and unless they can work some consistency into their offensive game-plan they are in a lot of trouble. The Bucs took a late lead, gave that up and committed a terrible game losing OT turnover. Ugly with a capital U.

28. Atlanta Falcons (28) – The Falcons came out in England on fire and got a big lead but unfortunately for them the Falcon D plays the same on both sides of the Atlantic and the Falcons blew a huge lead and lost a game they had in the bag. A terrible team, no matter what continent they are on.

29. Tennessee Titans (29) – Rookie QB Mettenburger (SP) is showing a decent ability early. A key turnover and many missed chances have led to a Titan D getting tired and now the D can’t stop the Texans and Tennessee, who usually can’t hold a lead, now has to try to come from behind. They couldn’t come from behind or stop the bleeding and lose another. A team in serious trouble.

30. Chicago Bears (27) – The BEARS are spending most of this game just trying to get a point and to somehow hold down the Pat O. The Bears have decided they didn’t want to play well on the road this week either. When a team is poor and struggling…turnovers are not just gold they are rat poison. The Bears are dead and buried and there are 30 minutes still to play. Barring a miracle this will simply be the ugliest loss of a very ugly year.

31. New York Jets (31) – The Jets, buried early by the Bills go to Vick. He has flash and experience but in the end he does about as much successful play as Geno does. There is much being made by the fact Vick led the Jets to 2 TDs late in the first half. I am not convinced the Bills simply went to prevent D. The Jets are no better with Vick and that is a fact. Want even more proof of this? Vick’s inherent fumble ability hasn’t left him with age and he keeps fumbling the Jets chances at victory to the other team. It is at a time like this when the Jets must be really happy Oakland is in the NFL otherwise they would be, without a shadow of a doubt, the WORST team in the NFL. Just awful.

32. Oakland Raiders (32) – The Raiders idea of a great wild cat is to bring in Matt Schaub and have him throw a pick. Me, I would just stick with Derek Carr. The Raiders are able to move the ball and their supremely questionable D is bending so far and not breaking. Holding Cleveland to only field goals in the first half is at least a moral victory. The Raiders can’t score any points but they are playing inspired D and that is keeping it close. The Raiders D finally faded and Cleveland got a decent lead. Carr has no quit and him and he rallied the Raiders to make it within 10 but that was all. Carr is the man for Oakland and Mack is the man on D. Oakland needs 51 other players and they can start back on the road to respectability.

There you have it! As always I enjoy sharing my in game and post game thoughts with everyone! I also enjoy every thought, agreement, comment, argument…just read it if you like! I will always take cash, preferably tens and twenties!

MR N’s #NFL Week 7 Power Poll‏

NFL Power Rankings

1. Dallas Cowboys (1) – The Cowboys have had issues with D and they have made some dumb penalties and they are lucky to be tied with the Giants at the half. What will the 2nd half bring? The Cowboys get credit for not giving up the run…they played ok D and got the points they needed and won a division match handily in the end. Another solid win by the best team in Football.

2. Indianapolis Colts (2) – Colts have had trouble scoring points against the Bengal D. Andrew Luck is showing a lot of heart to keep the ball moving against a tough D and the Colts are battling well. With more than 2 td’s the game is almost over in the third quarter. A brilliant win, dominating on O and D. A super team on a roll.

3. Denver Broncos (4) – A great win, the game was over within minutes. Peyton was not to be stopped and his D performed admirably and before anyone knew it, it was nearly a 20 point lead. The Broncos rolled. I give them full credit for a superb win. I am not 100% sure they are this good but they played really well.

4. Green Bay Packers (5) – Excellent opening drive. The Packers are starting out to dominate and this could get out of hand quickly. They are just blowing the Panthers away. Just a brilliant O performance has them very far out ahead. Green Bay has had this game won since the kickoff. Great play on O and D, superb performance. A team on a roll.

5. Baltimore Ravens (8) – Got an early lead and a turnover recovered by their D puts them in good position early. A bad pick by the Ravens stopped a red zone chance and that is bad. The Ravens are managing to get the scores when they need them and have a nice lead. A pretty solid game by the Black Birds and they are making a nice move on what is an open division. This was a great win for Baltimore and they need to keep this up.

6. Arizona Cardinals (10) – Arizona is having a bit of a hard time keeping ahead of the Raiders. Palmer has to watch out he doesn’t create too many more golden turnovers. Arizona didn’t seem to be totally into this game but they turned to an effective run offense and wore down the Raiders and won the game going away. Compared to the rest of their division, this team is the class act.

7. Philadelphia Eagles (7) – On the bye and they must have spent the week watching Dallas take down the Giants and they should have been game planning how to try to take control of their division back from those Cowboys. Good luck Philly (hope you worked on your D too).

8. New England Patriots (9) – The Patriots came out and found themselves being battled for every inch of the field on every play. The Pat offense had to give their all just to get points. The Pat D was pummelled by a strong running attack and they had issues covering too. For a long time this game was in doubt and only through the strength of playing a short week at home did they manage to gut out a close one. A win is a win.

9. San Diego Chargers (3) – The Chargers may be guilty of looking past this game to their upcoming tilt on Thursday with Denver. They are having to work awfully hard to be barely ahead of not great Chief team. To collapse and lose at home to KC is terrible for this team. They so badly needed to win this game. They have Denver on Thursday and then their post bye sked is brutal and now they may end 6-10. What happened to the Chargers?

10. San Francisco 49ers (6) – The Niner D, saddled with even more injuries, came out flat. They had no pass rush, their coverage was mistake filled and what little O they could inspire was well represented by a missed FG. In the end San Fran was on the receiving end of a record setting performance. They got destroyed on the road and they aren’t this bad but they did look bad.

11. Kansas City Chiefs (15) – The Chiefs are playing as hard as they can on the road in San Diego and are able to keep it very close. If it wasn’t for the dropped passes they might be in the lead. The Chiefs used their power run to eventually wear down the Chargers D and they hung around and won the game. A super win for this team but I think people shouldn’t read too much into it as the schedule gets much harder.

12. Detroit Lions (17) – Lions D is showing to be as formidable as advertised. Detroit also is playing self defeating as they usually do and are trailing early. The problems of the Lions continue every game. Win or lose. They continue to be undisciplined and mistake filled and that is making this team lose way too much. The Lions D managed to get a turnover at a key juncture and they Lions won one they didn’t seem to have a shot in. Another win for a team that has a record far better than the team is.

13. Miami Dolphins (20) – Nice recovery by Miami from a slow start to take an early lead. Dolphin D playing well, Tannehill perfect early. This game is going perfectly for Miami early. A great first half for Miami on the road. The Dolphins are dominating the match and will have to collapse to lose it now. A great win for Miami and one they must try to build off of.

14. Cincinnati Bengals (11) – Very, very early returns show an almost non-existent Bengal O line. The Bengals O can’t get any points. The Bengals can be thankful that their D is playing as hard as it is and keeping them in this game. Being shut out by the Colt D is a new low for Cincinnati’s struggling offense. In the end being shut out by Indy is humiliating and the Bengals suck now.

15. Seattle Seahawks (12) – The Seahawks are struggling on D missing key components. The Seahawks D is being pushed around the Hawk O is harmless so far. Now Seattle must find a way to come back from a deep hole with few offensive weapons. 2 field goals isn’t exactly the resume for victory on the road. Russell Wilson did all he could to win the game but it was the shocking mistakes by the D that led to yet another Seattle loss. This team is sinking fast now.

16. Cleveland Browns (13) – The Browns haven’t been able to get much offense going but have played shutout D for 15 minutes. The Browns can’t convert in the red zone for TDs but are getting 3’s. In the second half the Browns were never able to get the offense rolling and then the D got tired and the Browns took an ugly beating on the road and must re-assert themselves next week before they become the same old Browns.

17. Pittsburgh Steelers (21) – It has been said that Pittsburgh has ‘saved their season’ with this sloppy win on MNF. I hold back on that pronouncement. The Steelers played just about as badly as they could on O and D for almost the first third of the game. They were the recipients of 2 golden turnovers and they put both of them in and the rest was history. Turnovers are gold and the Steelers got the win. Let’s see them beat Indy next week before we say their season is saved.

18. St. Louis Rams (24) – A powerful drive for a TD shows STL is ready to play physical football against their division foe. Excellent Offensive finishes in the red zone have them out to a nice lead. A lead keeps getting bigger and this is a great a start as the Rams dreamed of last night. The Ram D bent but didn’t break and they gutted out a close win in this matchup and that bodes well for St. Louis.

19. Houston Texans (18) – The Texans played a pretty solid start to the game with good O and nice D and then committed the beyond horrible golden red zone turnovers twice in a row and the game was gone. This team will GO NOWHERE with Fitzpatrick at QB. They need a QB stat.

20. New York Giants (19) – The Giants have brought their better game to this clash and managed to keep it a tie on the road. Can the G-men do it hard for another 30 min? The simple answer is no. The Giants D couldn’t stop the Cowboy run attack and a key turnover was gold and ended any shot they had. The G men tried pretty well but a loss is a loss.

21. New Orleans Saints (16) – Saints continue to have problems on the road early in this game. New Orleans out to a lead on the road and that is a good place for them and their D is improved. The Saints continue to lead late in the third and are fairly impressive so far today. The Saints had this game in the bag but then a critical turnover by Brees led directly to a Lions TD and down they went. A good opportunity to come out of the bye strong ends in another loss. Bad.

22. Buffalo Bills (27) – Offensive struggles are aggravated by a golden turnover and they trail early. Suffering injuries to their 2 top RBs means the Bills are going to have to get contributions from lesser lights and WRs to have shot in this game. The Bills decided to turn the ball over 4 times and now face a Minnesota team that is dominating the line of scrimmage and this is looking ugly. The Bills didn’t quit and Kyle Orton found the fountain of youth and had a game winning drive for a touchdown. Amazing comeback. Can the Bills build on this? We will see.

23. Jacksonville Jaguars (28) – Solid D by Jacksonville is keeping this game close early. Two costly interceptions on Bortles are hurting the otherwise good Jag D show early. No offense yet. The Jags turned on the O and they poured it on and won it going away. A great win for Jacksonville!

24. Washington Redskins (29) – Excellent opening drive ends with a golden red zone turnover. That kind of thing haunts a team. The Skins are having trouble getting touchdowns and they will need those to win this game. Colt McCoy makes an amazing return to active play and shows the stuff he had in Cleveland. He turned around a moribund Redskins offense and got them the points they needed to win the game. Great comeback!

25. Carolina Panthers (23) – The open question continues to be, where is the Panther D? Whether the Panther O? Did anyone make the trip to GB for Carolina? The Panthers are basically finished and now will just score the odd garbage td against a 2nd half prevent defense. The Panthers seem to be a team without any talent and I sense the end is near for Riverboat Ron and his coaching staff. A bad loss.

26. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (26) – On the bye. Tampa has a unique opportunity ahead of them. All the teams in their division suck (Tampa does too) and through some sort of stupid flaw in the NFL this division gets a playoff spot for leading it. Tampa, you suck, but…you have as much shot as winning this ugly thing as anyone else. On the bye you were the only member of the NFC Shlocky South to not lose. Well done.

27. Chicago Bears (14) – Fierce Bear D right out of the box. Then they thought playing tough for 3 plays was their requirement as they didn’t show up for Miami’s second drive for a TD. A terrible pick by Cutler has the Bears in a bad spot and this looks like Chicago has decided to not show up again. Blowing it at home is shameful and Chicago just looks bad again. Ineffectual O and poor run D and this team has to have a miracle to come back in this. They didn’t get one and now are at the crossroads again. A schizo team.

28. Atlanta Falcons (22) – Falcons seem to be out of sorts and added a turnover to make things even better for them, not. The Falcons down 2 scores and look like they cannot figure out how to beat the Raven D. Atlanta just doesn’t have it today and are not even making this competitive. A good team would certainly try to bring something on the road. Alas the Falcons are not a good team and this was just an ugly loss.

29. Tennessee Titans (25) – Tennessee Titan D is playing very well early and setting the tone of the game early and are controlling the REDSKINS well. The Titans managed to get a TD and are gaining good control in the game at the half. Unfortunately for Tennessee they forget they must play 60 minutes and once more they choked and lost a game they had in the bag. This is now twice (almost 3 weeks in a row but for a lucky blocked FG) and the Titans have serious issues if they can’t win games that they have nice leads late in. Very ugly and you must question if this team has any heart.

30. Minnesota Vikings (30) – Minnesota is very slow starting but managed to use a recovered fumble to get them a 3 point 1st Q lead. Bridgewater has finally thrown a TD and that is but the first of many for what will be a great career (I believe). The Vikings have a lead and are starting to play solid Rush offense. The Vikings were in the enviable position of having a 6 point lead and all their D had to do was to make the stop. It didn’t and they lost. This isn’t the first time the Viking D has blown a game for them and I fear it won’t be the last.

31. New York Jets (31) – The Jets came out on the road, on a short week and had a superb game plan. They played the game nearly flawlessly for most of it and came within a blocked FG of winning it. Geno Smith is an aggravating QB…he can look like he shouldn’t be in the NFL – then he looks like a kid you can build a franchise around. Oy vay NYC.

32. Oakland Raiders (32) – The offense isn’t incredible but the D is playing pretty decent again. This makes almost 6 quarters in a row for the Raiders D to not play like crap. The Raider D couldn’t play 60 and Carr couldn’t get the points they needed. It was a game effort by the Raiders and they might have beaten other teams but they stand winless and need to cut down on penalties and play 60 minutes consistent.

There you have it! As always I enjoy sharing my in game and post game thoughts with everyone! I also enjoy every thought, agreement, comment, argument…just read it if you like! I will always take cash, preferably tens and twenties!

MR N’s #NFL Week 6 Power Poll‏

NFL Power Rankings

1. Dallas Cowboys (3) – The Cowboys are playing great and their superb O line has been dominating. The Cowboys were in the lead for most of the game and in control of time of possession. Alas their special teams woes have put the game back in question. I congratulate the Cowboys for a great effort. They went on the road to one of the toughest places to play and won the game. Great D, great O line play, solid O when they needed it. This is the best team in the NFL right now.

2. Indianapolis Colts (2) – The Colts jumped out to a big early lead on the strength of excellent play by Andrew Luck and the D playing really well. The fell into a bit of a coasting, prevent defense style and it served them well as they managed to hold on for a win and they are in firm control of their division.

3. San Diego Chargers (1) – Well it has come to pass again that San Diego, facing a no account opposition (like they did against Jacksonville) have completely mailed it in. It will likely turn out to be an ugly win for the Bolts. For now, early in the second half, the Chargers are trailing Oakland. This is beyond incomprehensible. The Chargers trailed til nearly the end and somehow managed to pull out a win. This is beyond the ugliest win of the year and if SD can’t play Oakland better than that…wait until their post bye schedule when they actually play tough teams.

4. Denver Broncos (4) – Seem to have mailed it in but should still win this one going away if they shake their heads a bit. The Broncos trailed for almost the whole first half. They have actually spent a ton of money on stamps to mail it in this badly. Finally a slim lead. We will see if the half time speech gets the Broncos moving. It took longer than anyone thought but Denver finally managed to pull away from the Jets. This has been a total mail it in, poor effort but they are up by 2 scores now. The Broncos never looked good and barely showed up. Luckily it was the Jets they were playing so they won by 14.

5. Green Bay Packers (6) – Pack slide down the field easily and take an early lead. The Packers are struggling a bit on offense but still have a lead on the road in what is turning into a tough game. The Packers must be struggling with the elements and they can’t get a lead in this game late in the 4th quarter. The Pack won the game in the last seconds and Rodgers looked great but he couldn’t have done it without 5 timeouts (2 were Miami’s but Miami was stupid). Ugly but effective win.

6. San Francisco 49ers (7) – The Niners came out pretty flat and their O didn’t seem to be able to make any significant plays. As one watched there was almost a sense that the inevitable was coming and lo and behold it did. San Fran roared back, caught up to the Rams and pulled away and never looked back. A solid win.

7. Philadelphia Eagles (9) – Came out afire, tore up the Giants with a strong pass rush and super rushing attack. Foles hit his receivers and this game was over in 10 minutes. Brilliant performance, probably their best overall game all year. Well done. Want to see them take on Dallas now.

8. Baltimore Ravens (10) – Excellent start for the Ravens. This turned into the greatest first half of the year for any team. 38 points. 5 TDs. This game is over with 40 odd minutes still to play. Blazing game for the Black Birds. Brilliant win and the Ravens now are making a play for their suddenly competitive division.

9. New England Patriots (11) – Pats are not playing great to start but not running away with it. The Pats have battled and are in a tough close game at the half. Will be interesting to see how they come out in the 2nd half. The Pats have gotten a few points and their D is playing effectively and they are close to putting the game out of reach. The Pats won it going away and now are in first.

10. Arizona Cardinals (13) – Carson Palmer’s almost surprising return has spurred the Cardinals O back to legitimacy. The Arizona depleted D must now make the supreme effort to keep this game within reach. Carson Palmer put up the points and the Cardinal D sealed the deal. Brilliant game and this team stands alone atop the NFC West. Can they keep this rolling now with Palmer back under center? Going to be fun to watch.

11. Cincinnati Bengals (12) – Where is the Bengal D? The Bengals D has tightened up and the Bengals have pulled into a small lead. Well done so far but they need to put this game away. Dalton is showing that he is capable of turning over the ball and keeping his team from leading in a game they should dominate in. Can Cincy pull out a win? We don’t yet know. Cincy has played bad and deserves to lose but have a shot in OT. To have ended in a tie because they can’t kick a field goal is appropriate for a team that is playing like crap and needs to get it together.

12. Seattle Seahawks (5) – Pretty unremarkable effort on O and D all the first half and if it wasn’t for a couple of great special teams plays the Hawks might be down by 3 scores. They have to tighten up to have a shot against a very tough opponent. Seattle simply is a shadow of the team that won the Super Bowl. The O can’t get it done, the D can be beat and being at home isn’t a great advantage. Hope they enjoyed the title last year as it appears they are one and done.

13. Cleveland Browns (19) – Struggling on offense early, like they usually do. Suddenly, wow, the Browns are rolling and have a great lead on the Steelers. Hoyer is rolling and the Browns look solid. Game just got better and better and the Browns have destroyed the Steelers and are coasting out up by 4 TDS. Brilliant win and this team is officially on the way up.

14. Chicago BEARS (25) – The BEARS have come out and played pretty well in this road game. To actually have a double digit lead after the half is about as much as they could hope for. Will be interesting to see if the O can add to it and if the D can hold the lead. What a great performance. Cutler didn’t turn it over and tossed the rock like an All-pro. The D was great today with pass rush and solid coverage. Sacks, knocked down passes and picks. Super performance, great road win…can they do it again?

15. Kansas City Chiefs (15) – on the bye, they still face a tough schedule ahead and it will test this team fully to even win 8.

16. New Orleans Saints (16) – on the bye, a team that was a preseason playoff hope and I thought might win 13. They have struggled mightily and they better hope they used the bye to get their D in gear or this is going to be one, long, ugly season.

17. Detroit Lions (20) – Solid start to the game, can they keep it up? The Lions are getting a lot of yards but not a lot of points so far. The Lions were finally able to get a few scores (they even kicked a field goal!) and they have taken advantage of two key golden turnovers and will have to completely collapse to lose this one. The Lions got another win with very little O and they really are a terrible team with a good record.

18. Houston Texans (17) – The Texans came out on Thursday and got whupped. I will admit that JJ Watt is the best Defensive player in the NFL and the best at his position and perhaps the best since Reggie White. All that adds up to a 5-17 record in the last 22 Houston has played. Their QB is woeful and they will never win anything until they fix that position. The D got hammered early and the O couldn’t bring them back. A team trending down now.

19. New York Giants (8) – I will be the first to admit I was shocked at that performance. I had been counting on a competitive battle between two strong teams. The Giants came out flat, the O line was back to it’s terrible week 1 and 2 performance and the D was sluggish and knocked off the ball. Terrible effort, back slid badly and now they have to figure out if the 3 horrible weeks are what they are or the three good ones.

20. Miami Dolphins (18) – Supposed to be benefited by the home heat but not early on. The Dolphins D is pressuring Rodgers and they are within a TD or so at the half which is about all they could hope for. Great effort by the Dolphin D and they are in a tight game that wasn’t supposed to be this close. The Dolphins had a lead until 3 seconds left and their horrible, terrible, unfathomable clock mismanagement gave Green Bay the chance to beat them and they lost. Who calls 2 timeouts in the last minute to give their opposition a shot to make the key play? Philbin. Some thought his GB experience would help Miami but it helped GB instead.

21. Pittsburgh Steelers (14) – Steeler D looks strong early. The Steeler D used up it’s strength in the first 5 minutes and now is being pushed all over the field by Cleveland. The Steelers have been pummeled pillar to post and are getting humiliated in a division game. Official changing of the guard in the NFC North and Pittsburgh is trending down now. Ugly division loss by a team that is looking very old again.

22. Atlanta Falcons (22) – Bad Falcon pass D has cost them a shot to be in control of a home game against a team that had been in trouble. It will come to the Atlanta O to score enough to get them back into this game. The Falcons were beaten all day long. The D that was suspect was convicted for impersonating an NFL D. Horrible effort.

23. Carolina Panthers (24) – Went length of the field for 7 which is unexpected. The first score seems like the end and now the Panthers have to play catch-up. The Panthers offense is getting it done and this game could come down to who has the ball last. It has come to OT and Carolina has done a great job on the road to have a shot. For it to end in a tie is a moral victory for Carolina who is starting to play above their pay grade.

24. St. Louis Rams (23) – The Rams gave it their all and their all was only worth about 17 points. Everyone watching and those who didn’t knew the amount of points ahead was not enough. It wasn’t much more than a few minutes and the Rams were suddenly trailing and that was that. The Rams seem to be missing a lot of key pieces and amazingly they seem to be on defense.

25. Tennessee Titans (30) – Must see if the Titans can pressure the rookie QB. The Titan D is taking advantage of a porous Jag line to get to the QB. Not much O here tho. Whitehurst has gotten a couple of scores for Tennessee and they have played decent D and they have another game in hand but the question is can they hold this lead? The Titans were a blocked FG away from losing two they had nice leads in. They won but I wouldn’t hold any parades. This is a bad team who squeaked out a win.

26. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (21) – Tampa Bay proving again early that Turnovers are gold. They simply are not a good enough team to make mistakes like this and keep themselves in a game. Good luck climbing out of this hole. Evidently the Bucs said ‘oh you think we are in a hole? Watch this’ 38 points down? Say hello to 1-6 and now this team is in danger of being Raider like. Just a terrible effort and that is their second bad effort this year. Perhaps it is time for blowing this thing up and starting fresh.

27. Buffalo Bills (26) – Playing ok to start their key division match-up. Grandpa Orton has gotten the Bills a TD to tie the game. Can this AARP card carrier get it done in this division game? The Bills seem to have run out of gas late in the game and now the Bills are looking at a loss if the D can’t make a key stop. They couldn’t and the Bills are no longer tied for first and now have to see if they can win one to stop this losing streak.

28. Jacksonville Jaguars (29) – Early lead in a game between two, equally bad teams. Bortles is showing really excellent work with the ball. He is accurate and if he had any sort of O line protection he would be really effective. Bortles has turned the ball over and the Jag offense just can’t get any points. They trail late and it would be amazing if they can come back. Bortles was incredible in the last two minutes and he did all he could to give his team a shot at a win. A blocked FG was all that held them down. A franchise QB behind a rotten O line. Solid effort in a loss by a great rookie QB.

29. Washington Redskins (28) – Cousins has played pretty well this game and has the Skins in a tight one in the desert. The Washington D has looked solid early too and now they must try to keep it going for 60 minutes. Ok the verdict is in. One really doesn’t know someone until there is a wealth of work on the books. Kirk Cousins is no better than the current RGIII. He makes too many mistakes to be considered a worthy starter for even the woeful Redskins. A bad loss.

30. Minnesota Vikings (27) – Bridgewater is going to be forced to score as the D isn’t up to the task early. The Vikings D is playing the bend not break and are keeping it close in hopes of some offense. Bridgewater is having his first real ‘rookie’ game with 2 picks and it has gutted the Viking hopes for keeping in this game. Can he somehow get 17 points in 8 minutes? I doubt it. The Vikes never got any offense going and another decent D effort was wasted. Ugly.

31. New York Jets (31) – Jets opened with blown coverage but managed to hold to a field goal. Looks like a long day for NYJ. The Jets got a TD which is close to a Columbus Day Miracle. They had a lead most of the half and are in this game at the half. Success for the Jets. The Jets are really becoming the East coast version of Oakland. Even if a team mails it in and doesn’t try…the Jets still can’t beat them. Yep the Jets are so bad a team doesn’t even have to try and they lose to them.

32. Oakland Raiders (32) – Derek Carr’s return has been a Godsend to Oakland. They have a bit of an offense and that has kept them in the game through the first half and now they have a lead. No matter how this ends, this is the best game Oakland has played this year. This was a great game by Oakland. For most of the game they played decent D (which has never existed so far this year) and they had a run attack and good play by Carr. A step forward. Can Oakland build on this good effort? We will see.

Well there you have it! It is weeks like this when I need more spots in between 24 and 32. Sometimes there seems to be too many bad teams and not enough good ones. I always appreciate all comments, thoughts, arguments and agreements…just read it and it makes me smile! I also will accept cash, preferably tens and twenties!

NFL Power Rankings

1. San Diego Chargers (3) – The Chargers have come out of the ‘Gates’ afire (superbly pun intended!) The team is ripping it with the pass, as expected, and the run (no one expected). The Score would have been at least 4 TDs but for a red zone turnover. Blazing start. The Bolts were never challenged. The D was solid, the O was amazing and the Chargers simply rolled. A very good team who is hard to beat.

2. Indianapolis Colts (4) – Colts D is playing far fiercer than one would expect and will make this game interesting. Not much offense but pretty good D has them in a tight game with the lead. The Colts deserve credit for playing one of their best defensive games of the year and they combined that with some gutsy O by Andrew Luck and the Colts won a good game. They are now one game away from controlling their division and they have that chance on Thursday.

3. Dallas Cowboys (6) – A dominant, brilliant drive by the Cowboys ruined by a Murray fumble. Turnovers are gold. The Cowboys are struggling to score TDs but have managed to get a slim lead. They need production to put this one away. Can the Cowboy D make the necessary stop to win the game, it is looking bad as the Cowboy D is looking inefficient. The last 2 minutes of the Cowboy D was embarrassingly bad and they can count their lucky stars they crawled out of this game with a win.

4. Denver Broncos (8) – Bronco pass O is right on the game and are taking it to what should be a tough Cardinal D. If Denver gets 1 more TD one may start to think the game is over. The Broncos couldn’t be stopped. The O was relentless and the D played well enough to carry this game. The Broncos rolled and now they are on a good roll.

5. Seattle Seahawks (7) – What can you say about their Monday night performance. Russell Wilson showed once more he is a man among men. He toyed with the REDSKIN D and their inability to put a spy on him led to his gashing them for over 100 yards rushing alone. The Seahawks dominated the game from the start and would have scored 50 if they hadn’t penaltied themselves out of many scoring shots. A great game but they best make an effort to clean up the penalties before it costs them a game.

6. Green Bay Packers (10) – They had a great win in a game that was a laugher. They rolled over a team that had no chance and I give them full credit for that. I am not ready to anoint them as Super Bowl contenders just yet. They need to take on a top team on a Sunday and show me what they are made of. They are improving, let’s see them beat Dallas or Cincy.

7. San Francisco 49ers (11) – SF is in a game with a feisty Chief squad. It is all that SF can do to lead by a FG at half time. Going to be interesting to watch them perform in the next 30 minutes. The Niners gutted out a win. The Special team kicking was the difference and the D played well. Solid running game. A very nice win. Good win SF.

8. New York Giants (13) – The Giants don’t have the same fire they had the last 2 games and will be interesting to see if they can get it going. The Giant pass rush is what I thought it was. It is good against bad O lines and not great against any other type of line. The NYG put together 2 excellent 2nd half drives to take control of the game and they win one that they had to fight for. Well done.

9. Philadelphia Eagles (14) – Yet another special teams TD for Philly. Question is, can they score an offensive TD? Early returns is just Field Goals so no. Eagles have played another good first half and now need to show consistency in the second half and hold onto this lead. The Eagles managed to put together a 60 minute performance that has righted their somewhat sinking ship and keeps them alive in the suddenly competitive NFC East.

10. Baltimore Ravens (5) – The Raven D is holding the Colt O at bay early and this looks to be a low scoring affair. Baltimore is finding out my tried and true rule is law…turnovers are gold and Flacco looks bad today. The Ravens offense just didn’t show up and the inconsistency of that part of their team makes one wonder how good this Raven team is. A poor loss for them.

11. New England Patriots (17) – Came out of a week of turmoil with a determination. They were humiliated on prime time and they had to face a storm in the media. They came out on fire, Brady looked like 2007 and the questionable Pat D played very well. This was their best game of the year. Can they do it again? We will have to see. Brilliant game.

12. Cincinnati Bengals (1) – So coming off a bye, looking more powerful than ever before, the Bengals got a chance to show the new guard was here. What happens? A D that had been flawless for 3 games was exposed as pitiful. No pass rush, poor route covering, bad run stopping. The Bengals D stunk. The O was back to being the Dalton led mess of 2013/2012/2011. An embarrassment. Now Cincy has to figure out if this was an outlier or are they simply a pretender.

13. Arizona Cardinals (2) – Being shredded by Peyton Manning may mean playing at altitude is hard for these desert warriors (I might have thought they would use the bye week to get to Colorado early). They need to really turn it on or this game is over. This just in, the game is over. Reduced to using a rookie 3rd string QB, nearly double digit drops, CB Cromartie looking like a small speed bump that Denver receivers just hopped over. The Cardinals got schooled and humiliated and now must take a restocking of themselves to see if they legitimately can have a shot in their division.

14. Pittsburgh Steelers (21) – Pittsburgh seems to be able to control the rookie QB and if the Steeler O can get a score or two then they will be in good shape. The Steelers played a pretty good D and combined that with an O that didn’t have its best in order to win a road game. Was in no way pretty but as always, a win is a win in the NFL.

15. Kansas City Chiefs (9) – The Chiefs are battling the Niners tough on the road. Decent D and Sort of effective O has them still in the game at the half. The Chiefs battled and I give them credit for that. Their D even made the stop it had to make to give them a late shot. Alas, Alex Smith threw a key pick and that golden turnover ended this game. Tough luck KC.

AFCWest

16. New Orleans Saints (24) – What is the deal with Jimmy Graham and I don’t ask that solely because I spent more than one first round fantasy draft pick on him. The Saints are having trouble scoring TDs and are barely leading a team they normally push around at the half. The Saints struggled on D for 60 minutes and nearly lost the game. They managed to squeak out an overtime win and I give them credit for that as the new rule says – A win is a win in this NFL.

17. Houston Texans (16) – There doesn’t seem to be any ability for the Texan D to win any battle with the Cowboy O line. The Texan O is doing nothing and their D is decent so the game is very low scoring. The game has been one of futility for the Texan passing O and it all comes down to a 2 minute drive to tie. The Texans had one amazing drive against prevent D but just came up 3 points short. Good effort but they now will be facing losing 2 in 4 days and falling out of first in the AFC South.

18. Miami Dolphins (18) – On the bye, they really needed the rest having had to fly back from Merry Old England. The Dolphins are coming off a great win but it also came off the backs of a horrible team so it is worth what it is. Can Miami do it better or the same against a team who can play football? We will see.

19. Cleveland Browns (28) – Hoyer looking under a lot of pressure early. The Brown D seems to be regressing as the early season heads toward the mid point. They are suddenly deep in a hole and the way they played 1st half I doubt they can come back. After sleeping through the first half they explode and play good D and O and now have a shot at winning this game when it first appeared out of reach. The Browns may have finally turned the corner. 16 unanswered points and they win a game that they were out of. A great win and one they might be able to build on. Well done.

20. Detroit Lions (12) – The typical Lions, they have a lead but I do not see them playing good or effective ball. They win but I am not sure how. The Lions pulled out the tried and true self defeating playbook. Stupid penalties, turnovers and mistakes and they lost a game that they should have won going away. So much for this team, Same Old Sorry Ass Lions.

21. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (20) – Tampa is showing a bend don’t’ break D that is allowing FGs not TDs so that is good so far but they need to score too. The Bucs are keeping it close which is all they could hope to do. Glennon broke the Bucs into a late lead and despite their losing it in overtime the Bucs can take pride in what was a great performance on the road. Using a proper QB may just save this team’s season from disaster.

22. Atlanta Falcons (19) – Atlanta is showing a bit of O and D and keeping it close against the Giants. The Falcons are playing it tough on the road and their O line seems to be winning the battle (and the Falcon O line has major issues!) The Falcons D again was the reason this Falcon team lost. The simple fact is the Falcons have serious D issues that will dog this team the whole year. An ugly loss.

23. St. Louis Rams (22) – Austin Davis unable to get the O working early. St. Louis really needs offensive production to give them a shot. The Rams seem to be totally flat coming off their bye and need to wake up or this one is over already. The Rams fell so far behind that the few garbage TDs they got late make the final closer than this game was. They never had a shot here. Ugly.

24. Carolina Panthers (25) – They managed a special teams TD and that goes above the over under for Panther O production already. The Panthers don’t seem to be a team built to come back from a 14 point deficit. Will have to watch and see. The Panthers put together an offensive show that seemed unlikely and they won a game going away. The had the good sense to take advantage of golden turnovers. Not sure how good this team is, they need much more analysis but I still fear not very good.

25. Chicago Bears (15) – Bears answer a special team TD and a turnover with their own turnover and a nice TD. The BEARS O is starting to roll and it is an open question as to whether this game is over with them scoring 21. The BEARS D played about as badly as I think they have in years. To allow the Panthers to score 24 points on offense is horrid. This team is a joke and their season is effectively in the toilet.

26. Buffalo Bills (29) – Buffalo O is showing exactly what I thought Orton would provide…nothing. Their D is keeping them a teeny bit in the game. The Bills battled and I give Kyle Orton credit in how he effectively drove the Bills to a key tying score and then led them to an improbable road win. Well done Buffalo. Sadly this might make Buffalo think Orton is the answer and he isn’t.

27. Minnesota Vikings (23) – The Vikings had little hope in this game and whatever hope they had ended when Bridgewater was ruled unable to play. Christian Ponder started and performed exactly as one would expect. He was out of his league, overwhelmed and couldn’t get any points for his team. The Viking D actually played pretty good for a while but grew tired and got pushed around all second half. The Vikes need to get Bridgewater back under center and start again. We will see in week 6.

28. Washington Redskins (27) – The Redskins played just about their best game of the year but they just don’t have enough talent for that to equal a win against a great team. Cousins was solid. He had protection once his tackling dummy of a right tackle left the game and a raw rookie took over. He was victimized by many drops and the rush offense was non-existent. A pretty good game that was a 10 point loss which kinda shows how good this team is (or actually isn’t).

29. Jacksonville Jaguars (31) – Bortles is playing a bit of a rookie game so far with a pick and some questionable tries but he is a leader. The Jags D didn’t play badly but Bortles was unable to get the offense rolling and they never got off the ground and down they went again.

30. Tennessee Titans (26) – Locker’s return to the starting has done wonders to a so far questionable Titan O. Titans playing their best football of the year so far against the Browns. Tennessee may be lucky they put up 4 TDs before Locker got hurt as Whitehurst will provide them no offense. He somehow has got them 2 tds and that means Cleveland’s D is BAD. The Titans have allowed Cleveland back in the game and now they need to hang on to win. The Titans had the game and gave it away. I think the loss of Locker meant their O never had the ability to grind out the clock. Ugly, disheartening loss and at home too.

31. New York Jets (30) – How bad are the Jets? We all know they can’t cover. When their D line gets punished and pushed around then there are severe issues. Geno Smith is doing his best ‘please play Michael Vick’ performance leading to almost non stop punts. And Vick came in and nothing changed. The Jets are just so ugly and bad it wouldn’t matter who was playing QB. The D is bad, the receivers are bad, the special teams bad, the coaching bad. This was a very ugly loss by a very bad team.

32. Oakland Raiders (32) – on the bye. They have a new coach and I wish Tony Sparano luck and I thought he was great in Miami and unjustly canned there. Can he turn this around? No. Can he get them fired up to win a few? No. I still see this team going 0-16. A team will have to massively mail it in, turn it over 10 times and not show up to lose to this team. This is a mess and I think it will be 4 years before they can put a contender on the field. They have a QB (Carr) and a MLB (Mack) and very little else. Draft well, trade the first pick for volume and aim for when Manning, Rivers and Smith have retired and Oakland will win the West…in 2018.

There it is! As always I am happy to just have someone read my work! I welcome any thoughts, comments, arguments and agreements! I would also take money…preferably tens and twenties!
